Why would they even try this? Do they enjoy losing/being embarrassed in front of everybody? I just don't understand.

Because there is a war going on between two fundamentally opposed cultures in the U.S. They cannot coexist peacefully, and the traditionalists are more aggressive right now. They have been losing, but now I am getting more and more worried. They might win. Not in this specific attempt, but they seem to be getting stronger and winning more general appeal.

Actually, I welcome this crap. They will lose, and they will only make themselves look bad in the process. Ideally, every hardcore fundie would be as open, public, and honest about his convictions as Phelps. Let the moderates see these fuckwads for what they truly are.

If something like this attempt fails miserably and gets too extreme, then it might alienate people, like when Falwell blamed 9/11 on gays, or Pat Robertson prayed for the removal of 3 Surpreme Court judges.

I'm sure some vote whore Congressman from a Bible Belt district will submit a bill like this just to say that he did. Then it will die in committee, because even a Congressman is smart enough to know that a law can't overturn a SCOTUS ruling.

Personaly, I think whatever they want to do is up to them. I HIGHLY doubt they're gunna be able to pull it off. But, its they're time, and they're money.
And hey, it wouldn't be America if we didn't have people trying to do something legaly impossible now would it  ?

They're doing it for money. They put up this bill in committee, and rally their constitutents around it. The bill dies, and the money is raked in. Next election period when it's attack ad time, they can point their fingers to the 'evil liberals trying to keep God down' and raise even more money.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.
