Things you don't get

Post by Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi »

Yes, another one of these threads...

1. Why do they start celebrating Christmas so early? It seems that the day after Halloween, stores start having Christmas sales, radio stations start playing Christmas music from then until the New Year, and people start putting up Christmas ornaments. Is there a reason why they must start celebrating a month and a half ahead of time?

2. When you're getting off a plane, and they're telling you planes that are leaving at different gates, they always say "B as in "Boy"", or "D as in "Dickhead"". Is this supposed to help certain people or something?

If someone has an answer to questinos in a previous post, or wants to post some of their own, they can.

1)They aren't celebrating Christmas.

They are SELLING Christmas.

(Oh, and the Christmas stuff shows up the same time the Halloween stuff does... just not all of it is put out then.)

2) Never heard anyone do that before. Must be an Imperial thing.

I'd rather people use the NATO Phonetic alphabet. 'Bee', 'Dee', and 'Vee' are easily misheard, especially when the PA system sounds like a Speak-N-Spell underwater, but 'Bravo', 'Delta', and 'Victor' are unmistakeable. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot??!

As for the whole Christmas thing, I think it's time to call it Moneymas. That's all people listen to nowadays...

One is because the evil corporate conspiracy wants to suck you dry and part you with your money.

Two is because "B" can sound like "D" and "C" can sound like "G" or some stupid crap like that.

Store owners have to feed their kids too. It's amusing to poke fun at, but seriously, it's not as if this practice harms anyone. I am at a loss to explain why some people find it offensive (not saying that you personally go that far, but I've heard a lot of people express such sentiments elsewhere).
2. When you're getting off a plane, and they're telling you planes that are leaving at different gates, they always say "B as in "Boy"", or "D as in "Dickhead"". Is this supposed to help certain people or something?
B and D sound similar over a PA system. That's one of the reasons that the military has a set of standardized words for all of those letters (instead of B or D, it would be Bravo or Delta).

Here's my question: why do people think it's bad to give cash as a Christmas gift? I love cash as a Christmas gift.

Cash is seen sometimes as rather impersonal as a gift.

But not to me. :)

I guess people think it's impersonal, shows you don't care. Not that I agree, I love getting envelopes with cash in 'em.

Speaking of Christmas, I'm always bothered by the people who whine about the commercialization of the holiday. The horror, the horror...

The Japanese do Christmas right as being a totally secular holiday, in my opinion. :)

There is a simple explaination for this: They are communist.
2. When you're getting off a plane, and they're telling you planes that are leaving at different gates, they always say "B as in "Boy"", or "D as in "Dickhead"". Is this supposed to help certain people or something?
Standard aviation practice used to alleviate misunderstandings of similiar sounding letters. The exact phoenic alphabet is Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-Ray, Yankee, and Zulu. And niner is used in place of the number nine.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

IMO, it's more convenient. Usually they always give something you don't want ... then... you just take the receipt they so kindly also given you and return it for the cash or exchange. Thus, it's easier to just get the money and won't be more pissed off at the giver for his choice. :D~Jason
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Using words for letters avoids confusion. Not only on a PA but the phone as well. Not everyone speaks the same flavor English as I do. I use the military alphabet with customers on the phone to avoid something like this.

"Sir, the serial number for your unit is: FCD3T12345"

"Okay, thats "f" "c" "b" "t"...."

"No, Foxtrot Charley, Delta, Three, Tango"

It also makes it easier to remember a string of letters.

Number 3 is because people gladly take in the crap. Why they calll it reality TV is beyond me, but it probably has something to do with not having to pay the stars of the show a million dollars an episode.

Why soem people say "I could give a shit" and "I could care less" when they mean 'couldn't'. It's not just one mistake - I've seen it often, and it makes no sense at all to me where that alternate phrease came form, if you could care less, why tell us?

I'm a grammar nazi, I know, but I like even cliches to make sense.

1- Why the current level of world asskicking is so low when the US Army has forty five or so brigades doing nothing.

Also, how come very few people know how to use the apostrophe correctly? I've seen so many people use it when they were simply making something plural (I took the dog's to the vet), rather than posessive. Or maybe I'm the one that has it all wrong.

Ooh, misplaced apostrophes. *shudder* Die, they must all die!

Your teacher lied to you, or was merely misinformed. While it is a somewhat recent practice (like within the last 20-30 years or so), Christmas is widely celebrated in Japan.
