Maximum Acceptable Commute?

Post by TrailerParkJawa »

What is your maximum acceptable commute for work or school?

For me it is less a function of distance and one of time. An hour is right around my limit. Anymore than an hour one way and Im just going to pass on the oppurtunity.

Right now, I've got a killer commute. It is 13.3 miles and 20 minutes from garage to parking lot. Where as my last assignment was 26 miles and 45 minutes in the morning, and 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes in the evening.

Depending on method and time, it can take me between 1hr 15min and 2 hours to get my ass to Secaucus. My maximum acceptable limit though is half an hour, but I've had so much trouble getting a job that I jumped at the chance to work at MSNBC.

What's good though is that a two-hour commute in relative comfort (bus, subway, bus) costs me only $4.10 each way, and driving in costs only around...hrm...$12 or so round-trip in tolls (I think...) if I take the Verrezano through Staten Island or if I go through Midtown.

Hmm this is the time it takes me now:

Walking ~2h
Bicykle ~20min
Car ~30min
Commute ~40min

I use my bike when it's not so frigging dark outside but now I commute.

About maximum accepteble time, it depends on the work and on the pay.

My commute is 6.18 miles, and it takes me about 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. This is entirely acceptable, though I preferred my old commute: 1.09 miles, approx. 2-3 minutes. That kicked ass.

The most I'd like to commute is 30 minutes, but I'd accept anywhere up to an hour, I reckon. Anything more than that, and we'd better be talking about a damn good job.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

It takes me about 45min to get to work. I just can't afford the rent closer to the city centre.

Before my dad switched jobs, he drove for about an hour and a half to work, and an hour and a half back. He had to switch jobs and work in NJ while our family was still in PA at one point, so he just drove six hours at the end of the weekend, spent the entire weekend in New Jersey, and then drove back Friday night.

Well, let me see...

Job #1 (Migliara Kaplan) w/no traffic: 25 minutes
Job #1 w/traffic: 45 minutes
Job #2 (coffeehouse) w/no traffic: 55 minutes
Job #2 w/traffic: 2 hours, 45 minutes
Job #3 (private percussion studio) w/no traffic: 30 minutes
Job #3 w/traffic: 40 minutes
Job #4 (Johns Hopkins) w/no traffic: 45 minutes
Job #4 w/traffic: 1 hour, 30 minutes

That's about it. I interviewed for a job that was 1 1/2 hours away without traffic (which never would've happened, since I'd have to drive on I-95 and 495 (the beltway around DC) every day during rush hour. Fun. Didn't end up taking the job, because the commute would've ended up being about 2+ hours. Yuck.

Commute to my part time computer job - 8 minutes tops
Commute to my bike shop job - 10 minutes by car, 15-20 by bike.
Commute to school - 1 hour
Commute to my old internship job - 1 hour if I was lucky, usually 1.5 hours.

1 hour is right at my limit, dealing with psychotic asshole drivers for 1.5 hours every day was way too stressful.

If I found a well paying job in Columbus, which is 60+ miles from where I live, I might accept it

College would not be worth making 40 mile trips for

Longest for me was back during the first two months of my first term of freshman year at Iowa before I was approved for dorm housing. My sister attended the Law School so I would ride with her from Cedar Rapids to Iowa City and vice versa at the end of the day. It's ~45 miles one way, so it takes only about 45 minutes to drive between both cities.

I don't drive so I often would sleep or talk with her.

Everyone examples are a prime reason why mass transit often goes unused.

You work where you are offered a job.
You live where you can afford.

Those two things usually do not coincide for jobs after college or high school.
Not to mention that under most circumstances mass transit simply won't get you there in time.

Right now it takes me ten minutes to bus downtown for class, for about forty-five to walk. For a job, I would drive up to a little over an hour. My dad commutes anywhere from forty minutes to two hours depending upon where he gets a contract (he's a journeyman wireman working out of Madison and living an hour north of there). Damn he can be pissy when he has to commute to Janesville or some other place for any length of time.

Taking the stairs from the Manor down to the cave-2 mins.
:P

1 hour commute assuming the usual amount of traffic.
The longest I've had was 1 1/2 hours, and I'd say that's about my limit.
Both, I might add, using public transportation.

Hmmm, from my home to school it takes about 10-15 min. walking and train.~Jason 15 min. is my acceptable limit I guess. I don't really have one lol now or yet.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

about 15 miles.

based not on travel time: (I don't much care about travel time) but on petrol costs as a proportion of my disposable income.

Ie, on my current wages I can afford to commute to work 15 miles away. If I got paid more I'd be willing to go further.

Petrol costs in the UK suck ass... When Americans pay $1.29 a litre, they'll understand.

1 mile

Car:10 minutes, counting stoplights and the walk from the parking building. (if it's cold or raining, or about to rain)

Walk: 20 minutes, counting stoplights and traffic

Bus: 30-45 minutes, counting one block to the bus stop, stoplights, other people's bus stops, traffic, and the two blocks from my bus stop.
