About to order a new system.

Post by weemadando »

>Intel P4 2.6GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K 478pin .13u CPU (Boxed) - Hyperthreading

>ASUS P4P800 i865PE 800MHz FSB with SATA, RAID, GB LAN - SKT 478 - ATX

>Hynix or equiv. 512 MB - DDR RAM PC3200 400MHz

>Premium MidiTower ATX w/300W P4 and P3, 4x 5.25, 2x 3.5 Bays

>400W Power Supply Unit, P4 ATX Type

To go with this I have a GeForce4Ti4200 (64mb), a GameTheatre XP, and requisite HDDs, FDDs and CD and DVD drives.

Anyone see a hole in this system? Or have any recommendations?

Not an uberwank system but quite good specs.

What will be it's purpose? Posting on sd.net or playing da hottest games in town?

Well seeing as I now have to be able to play THE LATEST games out (due to being an official member of the gaming press now) its a bit of both.

Do your employeer pay for the system? If so I would go for a hotter grapics card.

No, I'm having to do it myself, its the worst thing about being at a volunteer position, but at least my co-host and I are getting formal recognition from distributors, so we are getting press releases and soon, hopefully review copies.

Nothing wrong here, though I hear that the 2.4C has a lot of overclocking headroom. You might try getting higher-quality RAM and overclocking the 2.4C up to high levels.

I'ld scrap the GForce and get the latest Radeon you can afford.

It will make a difference with the latest games.

Ando, there was in Canada a recent BIG price drop on processors. I bought myself a new system less than a week ago, and where I was originally considering a 2.6ghz, I was actually able to get a 3.0 for the SAME PRICE that the 2.6 had been a week earlier.

Now, I don't know if the savings translates to where you are, but it might be worth looking at how bad the price jump is.

That and the video card you have selected is bunk. Go Radeon; I had the opportunity to do a side-by-side test before I bought and the hype machine is right for a change: the Radeon 9800 Pro is king of the gaming rigs (although I have an XT, you'd probably do just dandy with a 9700 Pro, which costs a lot less).
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

IIRC, Anders is just cannibalizing old parts (his GPU and sound card)

What brand is the PSU? It's not some generic cheapo PSU, is it? Because those are bad.

Generic PSUs have bad quality control and can fail quickly. You don't neccessarily have to get an Antec TruePower or a PC Power & Computing PSU (both of those are quite good), but a cheap Deer is begging for trouble.

Of course, I know one person online who powered twin Xeon 2.6Cs on a Deer for a short period of time...
