Do i see Dorkstar getting more ammo to his anti-EU & ICS arguments? Im quite sure he will try to mis-use this, but now we have pretty good understanding that the EU is not a universe outside that of the movie SW at all considering that Lucas doesnt want the movies to have persons with same names as in EU and thus uses an encyclopedia to see that there isnt one. Also, he only mentions keeping the EU away from the TIME PERIOD of his saga. Also, "very little" allready means that altough only a little, the EU does influence the movies. As I asked him, Lucas leaned back a moment and said to me “Very little.” When he first had agreed to let people write Expanded Universe books, he had said “I’m not gonna read ‘em” and it was a “different universe” that he wanted to keep away from the time period of his saga. He jokingly complained, however, that now when he writes a script he has to look through an encyclopedia to make sure that a name he comes up with doesn’t come too close to something in the EU.
Interesting. Any takes on this?

He is saying that the films and EU are basically two version of the universe. The joke he made is about how the EU has grown so much that its hard for him to invent unqiue names anymore. Lucas obviously disregards all EU and often times ends up undoing what has already been done in EU. He doesnt want to mess up EU intentionally because its a great way for the fans to enjoy epanded adventures in the SW universe so he encouraged EU writers to do mainly post-ANH stuff.

Obviously he cares enough for it since it is his world, so helps out once in a while when it is necessary to consult with him but by and large his philosphy is "here is the universe, go play with it and do your thing and i'll do mine". His writting of the prequels has shown an obvious disregard for EU continuity (as he should) to the point where its obvious that the EU universe is an alternate version of the SW universe. Its nothing shocking, and it shouldnt hamper enjoyment of it, its just inevitable due to its nature. The EU authors do their best to try and explain and connect all the errors but its pretty useless. Its one thing when he helps an EU artist with their work, but when Lucas' contradicts, alters and changes the history at will--not to mention the immense differences in style, tone, story and characters--its obvious that the EU is considered a seperate entity from the film series. And its just as well because the EU is filled with shitty sci fi crap.

I wasn't able to write as fast as Mr. Lucas spoke, so I copied down some key statements and got the gist of the rest. Once I locate the tape that was made of the event, I'll be able to provide exact quotes. Nothing is taken out of context.

Whuzzah? Why would he do that? I don't think it added to anything at all to have a load of stuffy and embarassing acting in a film. The bad acting in Episode II was “done on purpose” and is "part of the style.”

When you put it like that ("the bad acting is intentional") it sounds dumb but Lucas is very much correct. The SW dialogue is done in a particular style to emulate the cheesy, over the top dialogue of the 1930's serials that the films are based on. Have you ever seen movies from that period? You'd be amazed at how close they sound to the prequels style. The acting is kinda in the same vein as well. I dont know if it could be called "bad" acting, since it is emulating a particular style that is very different from modern method-style acting, but it is intentional. People forget that Star Wars is not some ultra-serious, moving epic film series like LOTR--its a 1930's serial. It would be nice if Lucas gave the epic story the treatment it deserves in a serious and dark series, but SW was conceived of as Flash Gordon, not The Odyssey. But having said that, the OT is still better written--it retains the style that Lucas is intending but comes off as more natural and dramatic.Rye wrote:Whuzzah? Why would he do that? Yeah, i'm a fan of old-skool b movie acting, but i don't think it came off like that at all. It sounded more like Pride and Prejudice trying to be Flash Gordon, and ended up irritating to watch, and didn't work the way it should.
A similar thing was in the OT, but i don't think it took itself too seriously, whereas it was taken more seriously in the new ones, and i dunno..like it was sanitised to super-family television pretend innocence rather than the carefree innocence turning to flash gordon feeling to the OT dialogue.
Or is it just 7 aM and i've had no sleep and am talking rubbish?

It's just, the way in which he said it was "done on purpose" was just amusing.

No surprise it showed up there, since it seems to indicate you went out of your way to alert them about this little Q&A session. Nothing like a little self-aggrandizement.Marc Xavier wrote:Oh wow. Neither do i but its not the question what we see that might help his cause, its what he sees. Particularily the "different universe" might make him think that he is right afterall.Lord Poe wrote:How? While I would prefer to get the exact thing he was talking about (and would love to know if my question about first names of palpatine & dooku came up), until then I'm not suprised by Lucas's response about the EU question. Look at what was asked: Not "How official are the EU books?" but "How much do the EU books influence the movies?". And Lucas said that when it came to writing the movies he treated the books as a different universe and rode roughshod over them. He ignored them and the EU has to adjust for the movies: Same policy as always. Says nothing about their status as official.

I suppose there is also a question as to whether GL even considers tech manuals dealing with stuff from the films (like ICS) to be EU, or just the storylines/characters from the novels/comics/cartoons/etc. The apparently extensive use of the ICS books as film production references would certainly seem to indicate the latter.Ender wrote:Same policy as always.
