Oh, For God's Sake.
Geez, let's see...anti-NAFTA protestors having a track record of senseless vandalism, unlicensed 'gatherings' crowding in on the convention center, an organized attempt at breaking into the building....gee, could the cops possibly be over-reacting in breaking out the riot gear?

On Thursday, as trade ministers from 34 countries drafted a blueprint for free trade in the Western Hemisphere, demonstrators threw water bottles and other objects at officers, set fires in the street and used slingshots* against police. Riot police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, batons, concussion grenades and stun guns.
Sounds to be like the police reacted appropriately. Those people weren't protesting they were rioting. If the police waded in and busted a few heads so what? It was totally justified.
*If they were using the "archery" type slingshots you get at sportgoods stores then that's a lethal weapon. Those can easily fling something at 200mph. Goofing around with some friends we managed to put a marble clear through a metal garage door with one of those.

Two people from my school were arrested Thursday, released on bail Saturday.
They were arrested while on their way to the protest, well away from the action.
Why?
Because the police could.
They also had horrifying stories to tell of their two nights in prison. Clear cases of excessive use of force and police brutality.

If you don't ask, how will you know?

Get it clear, that wasn't a protest that was a riot. Boohoo for your friends but if they were on their way to join that the police were right to send them to them to jail.Worlds Spanner wrote:Two people from my school were arrested Thursday, released on bail Saturday.

If they are on the way to riot, against police, and IF they were armed, GJ to the police for taking them in.Worlds Spanner wrote:Two people from my school were arrested Thursday, released on bail Saturday.
