Chapter 1

Captain's log: Stardate 53143.5

With the Dominion war over and Jem'Hadar forces withdrawing from the Alpha Quadrant, the Enterprise has been dispatched to oversee the Dominion withdrawal from the Mavis sector. The Mavis sector consists of 13 worlds rather removed from the heart of the Federation, near to the badlands. For the majority of the war, Dominion forces occupied The sector. It is my hope we can reassert control rather swiftly, as it would not do to show weakness to the Romulans, who are sure to be observing the Federation's rebuilding with interest and an eye to the best opportunity for themselves.

The sleek form of the USS Enterprise dropped from warp speed and made for the 3rd planet of the Carlon system. Captain Picard watched the lush green and
blue globe drawing closer on the main screen.

"Mr. Data, scan this system. Any sign of a Dominion presence?" asked Captain Picard.

The golden-skinned android worked his console, his hands moving faster than the human eye could see.

"Sensors detect no Dominion sensor signatures in the immediate vicinity." Data reported. "However, I am detecting a group of Dominion vessels at extreme range."

"What's their heading?" asked Riker.

"They are on course for Deep Space Nine, sir." Answered Data.

"Very Good." Said Picard. "Helm, take us into standard orbit over Carlon 3."

"Sir," Data interjected, looking up from his console. "I am detecting 12 asteroids in Geostationary orbit of the planet. Each is approximately 1 kilometer in diameter and appear to have been hollowed out. I am detecting strong energy signatures. Lifesigns are present, but interference from the power signatures is obscuring exact readings."

"We didn't put those there, did we?" asked Riker.

"There is no record of any local or Starfleet project involving artificial moons in this system." Data replied

"Sir!" said Lt. Bryant at tactical. "We are being hailed by one of the asteroids!"

"Put them on the main viewer." Said Picard. The viewscreen came on, and displayed a busy looking ops center. Officers and crewmen in olive drab military uniforms went about their duties in the background. In the
center of the screen, a high-backed chair spun slowly around. Seated in the chair was a severe looking older man, gray eyes and gray streaks at his temples. He spoke.

"Attention Federation starship. This is Commodore Hauser, Confederate Navy fortress Command. You are trespassing on the sovereign territory of the Confederacy.
You are not welcome here. You have 1 minute to leave."

Picard just looked at the man for a moment, digesting this new turn of events. "I am Captain Jean-Luc Picard. This planet is a Federation colony. We are here to reaffirm Carlon 3's standing as a territory of the UFP." He replied.

"You may go to hell, Captain Picard. We want no part of your Federation any longer. The Dominion showed us the truth about you. My crews and I are prepared to die rather than come under the yoke of the Federation again." Hauser snarled in reply, his evident anger showing he was not bluffing about his intentions.

"What is the meaning of this? You're talking about Rebellion!" exclaimed Picard.

"You're damned right. You have 10 seconds." Hauser signaled over his shoulder to people off-screen.

"Captain, the asteroids appear to be powering up weapon systems! Request permission to raise shields and target Phasers!" Bryant looked expectantly at his Captain for confirmation.

"Denied." Said Picard. He then turned back to the man on the screen. "We do not want another war! You can still stand down!"

The Confederate, as he had called himself, just sneered and cut the channel. Suddenly, the Enterprise was rocked by a powerful explosion.

"Raise shields!" said Riker.

"What was that?" asked Picard, getting to his feet.

"That was a proximity burst from some kind of torpedo, Captain. A warning shot." Said Bryant pulling himself back upright at his console and raising the shields as he answered.

"Helm, prepare for evasive action!" ordered Picard.

----

On the asteroid, huge gunports cycled open and powerful Phaser cannons switched into engagement mode. The big weapons had been developed on the principles of the weapons found on Starfleet's Defiant-class corvettes, but these were fed by dedicated reactors, and packed roughly 3 times as much power. The Asteroid fortress's gunners locked onto the /Enterprise/, training all the guns that could bear on the ship. The chief gunner pressed his firing button, and 3 of the cannons fired, hurling brilliant orange-white pulses of energy at the Starship.

The Enterprise shook violently and a console at the back of the bridge exploded in a shower of sparks as the 3 powerful blasts walked across the shields.

"Shields at 62%, Sir!" said Bryant.

"Helm, get us out of here, full Impulse power!" The ship turned gracefully, accelerating away from the planet as another series of phaser bursts ripped through the
space it had just occupied. The helmsman accelerated toward open space, weaving and dodging as he opened the range.

----

Captain Heinz von Falkenhorst sat in his command chair on the bridge of the destroyer /Bloodhawk/. The compartment was very ergonomic, with no carpet on the bare durasteel deckplates, safety warnings and instructions stenciled on the bulkheads, and very functional consoles. He was snappy looking in his sharp olive Confederate Navy uniform, steel cleated military boots, and black leather trenchcoat. The ship ran with most of it's power pumped into the engines and armament, and the heaters were never quite able to keep the temperature much above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. As a result, Falkenhorst and several of his crew were wearing overcoats and sweaters. He watched the screen as the Carlon orbital Fortresses opened fire on the Federation Battlecruiser. It had begun. No sooner had their Dominion friends left than the Federation moved back in. He raised his voice.

"Helm, lay in a pursuit course. Gunnery, prepare all weapons for action. Comms, signal the /Falcon/ and /Rapier/. Disengage cloaks and accelerate to flank speed."

The three short, stubby Confederate Destroyers decloaked and cranked up their powerful Impulse engines. They raced after the fleeing /Enterprise/, gunnery officers locking their weapons on target. They closed the gap quickly, their phaser cannons spitting fire. The 3 ships displayed remarkable manoeuverability, their gunners firing away as the small vessels swerved and weaved to avoid the Enterprise's return fire. The /Enterprise/ just barely made the jump to warp. The 3 Destroyers slowed, scanned to make sure the Enterprise was really on it's way out, and then returned to the planet, entering standard orbit.

Chapter 2

The Enterprise was docked at Starbase 304, taking on
supplies and fuel. It's crew however, was mostly still
aboard the ship, as Starfleet had declared a general alert
in the region. After the /Enterprise/ had put in at the
starbase, Picard and his staff had sent off their report to
Starfleet command. The officers were sitting around a table
in the ship's briefing room. The doors swooshed open and
Picard walked in, his face looking a little pale. Riker
spoke first.

"Have you heard back from Starfleet Command?" he
asked.

Picard didn't reply for a minute. When he did, he
couldn't hide the dismay in his voice. "The Federation
council has ordered Starfleet to secure the situation in the
Mavis sector by "Police action." These orders state that we
are to use whatever means necessary to return that sector to
UFP control."

"Does that mean we're expected to go in there and
blast those Confederate people out?" asked LaForge in
disbelief.

"I asked Admiral Thomas the same question. He
explained it to me in crystal clear detail." Said Picard,
his voice quivering.

"Starfleet expects us to fight our own people? The
Domininon is obivously behind this! No right thinking
Federation citizens would ever do this!" exclaimed
Riker.

"Apparently, starfleet isn't willing to risk renewed
war with the Dominion. The attack on Cardassia took a heavy
toll on our fleets." Replied Picard.

"That is still no reason to fight a war against people
who were loyal citizens until 2 years ago!" said Troi.

"Obviously, the Dominion has shown them something that
has changed their minds about the Federation. Whether it was
true or false is no longer the point. We must move
quickly and decisively against any potential problems,
whether we like it or not." Picard looked around the table
at his officers, realising it was time to point out the
realities of the situation they now faced. "Look how the
Romulans are balking at withdrawing their forces from the
areas they liberated. Soon we will have to face them, and
our internal problems can only work to their advantage."

A moment of silence passed around the briefing table.
None of the officers present liked what their Captain was
telling them, but orders were orders, and it was their duty
to follow them.

"Therefore, Starfleet has assigned me to lead a
Taskforce of 12 ships back to Carlon 3 to retake the system
for the Federation. They will be assembled here within the
week. Until then, we are to do everything we can to prepare
for battle. Mr Data, if you would please." Said Picard. Data
stood up.

"From what we saw in the Carlon system, the Dominion
has provided the Confederacy with substantial amounts of
technology and or assistance." Data started "They utilize
Phaser cannons, and we have seen 3 examples of small, 250
meter Destroyers. Their weapons appear to be powered by
dedicated reactors, and have higher energy handling
capacity. This makes them 2-5 times more effective than
Starfleet models. These vessels were very fast and
manoeuverable, despite their rather large size. They also
utilized cloaking devices. However they dropped cloak before
engaging their engines to pursue us, it is unknown whether
this was a deliberate attempt to deceive our intelligence
gathering or if they genuinely cannot run a cloak whilst
running their engines at maximum power."

"How did they get ahold of this stuff?" asked Bryant.

"The Defiant class starship USS /Razorback/ was known
to have been captured by the Dominion during the war, and we
now know that at least 4 changelings managed to infiltrate
Earth." Said Data.

"Who knows how much they were able to make off with."
said Riker.

"We might also expect to find more of their planets
guarded by asteroid fortresses." Data continued. "Their
Phaser cannons are roughly 3 times as powerful as the
phasers aboard this ship, and make it very dangerous to
approach transporter range."

"So any landings are out of the question." said Riker.

"We would have to commit heavy fleet resources to
neutralize the orbital defenses before landing troops." said
Data.

"This is gonna be one hell of a fight... Said Geordi.

2. The nam fic is actually the sequel to mailed fist. I'm working on it ON and OFF and am on chapter 2 of 15 chapters.

I will post chapter 3 of mailed fist on Sunday 05.October, unless you can get me a load of people to post in this thread demanding more.

Here it is, yer saturday dose of ELECTRONIC COKE, MAILED FIST

Chapter 3

The 12 ships had left Starbase 304 just a day ago, and
were now approaching their destination. The Enterprise led
the formation, accompanied by 2 Galaxy Class
Battlecruisers, 4 Excelsior Class Cruisers, 2 Akira Class
Cruisers, and 3 Miranda class Destroyers. The ships carried
a combined total of 48 Peregrine fighters in their shuttle
bays.

Captain Picard was on the /Enterprise's/ bridge,
issuing the orders that would deploy his fleet. "The
/Enterprise/ will take the point with both Galaxies trailing
her at the flanks. The /Excelsiors/ will split into 2 two-
ship elements, one above the formation and one below. The
/Akira's/ are to take the outer Flank Picket positions to
prevent our being outflanked by any large Confederate
forces. The /Miranda's/ are to cover our rear and be ready
to reinforce any other groups that require aid under enemy
fire."

Acknowledgements came in as the Starfleet ships
deployed in the outer edge of the Carlon system. They moved
forward under impulse power, their course taking them
towards Carlon 3.

"All vessels, prepare to engage the orbital defenses.
Do not hesitate to use evasive manoeuvers. Their gunners are
good." said Picard.

This time, no pleasantries were exchanged between the
orbital forts and the Starfleet vessels. Picard's armada
deployed and moved in, firing torpedoes at long range.

----

Commodore Hauser smiled as he watched the Federation
ships launching their torpedoes. He activated the command
frequency. "All stations, point defenses free!" he ordered.

As the torpedoes streaked toward their targets, they
were met by a hail of small, fast moving pellets. While not
enough to harm a starship with it's navigational deflectors
up, they made short work of the incoming torpedoes.

----

Picard watched in dismay as the volley of torpedoes
was swatted down by an invisible hand.

"Mr Bryant, ready on phasers." He ordered, then turned
to Data. "Mr Data, what happened to our torpedoes?"

"Apparently our torpedo's were shot down by numerous
small railguns, sir. I am reading a large number of turrets
on the surface of the asteroid." he said.

"Damn them." said Picard. "Move the fleet into Phaser
range, it looks like we will have to do this the old-
fashioned way."

The Federation ships drew into range, and the order
went out. Gunners locked their heavy phaser cannons on
target and began firing. A volley of shots lanced out,
pounding against an Excelsior's shields. The ship spun away,
it's helmsman trying to avoid the heavy fire. The Enterprise
swooped low over one of the fortresses, dodging and weaving
as it's phaser arrays fired burst after burst into the
station's powerful shields.

"Sir! The /Adams/ reports that they have taken damage.
They wish to withdraw."

"Tell them to do it." said Picard. He did not like the
way this battle was going. He was becoming concerned about
those cloaked ships. They had been nowhere to be
seen, but he was sure they were lurking somewhere nearby.

----

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet,
Confederate Flight Lt. Andrew Thorpe swung himself into the
cockpit of his fighter. It was one of the new models, just
delivered from the hidden shipyards in the Badlands. His
squadron and another were preparing for launch.

The crank-winged fighter, designated "Starhawk" by the
Confederate Starfighter corps, carried 2 antiship missiles
on wing hardpoints, which his armorers were busy
checking over. 2 Phaser cannons were mounted in the
wingroots, and the aft end of the ship was taken up by twin
sublight engines. The armorers ran clear, and one gave him
the thumbs up. The voice of the ground controller buzzed in
his headset as he finished plugging in his oxygen, power,
and computer uplink lines.

"Raven flight leader, you are cleared for launch.
Godspeed."

"Roger that, beginning preflight now." said Thorpe.

All around the field, similar operations were taking
place as the other 23 pilots did much the same thing. Thorpe
quickly ran through the preflight checks, and activated his
antigravs, the ship floating up over the tarmac. He leveled
out at 30 meters and activated the sublight engines. A sonic
boom shook the ground as his fighter rocketed for the upper
atmosphere.

Thorpe enjoyed the giddy sensation as he looked at his
scopes. The rest of his fighters were burning their engines
on full, climbing to catch up with him. They formed up as
they accelerated past the unengaged defense platforms. They
rounded the planet, and a sight of chaos greeted their eyes.
Several starfleet ships had been damaged, and were pulling
back. One was hit several times in rapid succession by
phaser fire, turning it into an expanding cloud of wreckage
and plasma. The other Starfleet ships continued fighting,
having damaged one fortress and leaving it for dead they
were trying to beat down the shields of another. They had
it's shields down to about 47% percent, but the station's
gunners were giving the attackers hell.

Thorpe got on his mike. "Ok, men. We're only gonna get
one clean shot on these SOBs, so let's make it count. Target
by flights, and syncronize you're launches if you can. Ok
break by flights and attack!" he ordered. The other ships
waggled their wings and broke into their separate flights.
Thorpe rammed his throttles to full, and shot forward. His 2
wingmates did the same, and they began targeting one of the
/Galaxies/.

----

"Captain! New contacts coming around the planet! They
are accelerating!" exclaimed Lt. Bryant.

"What are they?" asked Riker.

"Fighters, sir!" Replied Bryant, firing the phasers
again.

"All ships, begin pulling back. Prepare to launch our
own fighters." ordered Picard.

The ships began pulling out, dodging and weaving,
leaving the battlestation to recharge it's depleted shields.
The starfleet fighters began launching, even as the
Confederates roared in, firing their missiles. One of the
/Akiras/ took a series of hits from a full spread of the
missiles, the small but fiercely concentrated blasts of
their warheads spearing through the ship's shields and
boring small, jagged holes in the hull. The ship shuddered,
venting atmosphere and plasma, it's running lights
flickering. It's hangar deck began belching fire as one of
the Peregrine's launch runs was upset and it crashed on
takeoff. The Confederate fighters peeled off, priming their
phaser cannons for another run.

The Federation fleet had been mauled, although not
badly enough to necessitate withdrawal. One of the Miranda-
class ships had been destroyed, An /Excelsior/ was badly
damaged, as were both /Akiras/. One of the /Galaxies/ had
suffered shield depletion, while the other was dealing with
hull breaches from the fighters' missiles. The /Enterprise/,
her shields depleted, was in the best shape of them all. The
ships had managed to put somewhere around 30 fighters into
the sky, but they were proving to be outclassed by the less
numerous Confederate pilots and ships.

----

Captain Falkenhorst watched on his tactical screen as
the Starfleet ships huddled together for protection against
the fighters, out of range of the battlestations. His 3
ships had been joined by a fourth, the /Dagger/. They were
laying well off from the battle, under cloak.

"ETA for number 2 squadron?" he asked.

"3 minutes, sir." replied a black uniformed officer
somewhere behind him.

Falkenhorst smiled, "Gunnery, load the forward tubes
with EMP torps. Stand by on phasers. Signal the other ships
to do likewise, and deploy us aft of the Starfleet vessels
."

----

"Our phasers seem to be holding off those fighters
fairly well." said Picard, watching as one of the cranked-
wing Confederate ships was caught by a volley of phaser
bursts and destroyed.

"Let's hope there's not any more of them." said Riker.

"Mr Data, can you figure out a way to take out those
orbital forts with more speed and less damage to ourselves
?" asked Picard.

"Perhaps we could--" The ship rocked as a large
explosion occured nearby.

"What the hell was that?" yelled Riker.

"Sir, the USS /Lewis/ is hailing us." Bryant said,
relaying the message to the viewscreen.

The viewscreen switched to the burning bridge of one
of the Galaxy-Class starships. A bloody officer was sitting
in the Captain's chair.

"Picard! These rebels are crazy! One of their fighters
just hit our starboard warp nacelle! We're going to have to
jettison the core!"

"Hold tight." said Picard. "Mr. Data we need to do
something now." He ordered.

----

The /Bloodhawk/ was in position. Falkenhorst watched
as a Galaxy-class Battlecruiser lost it's starboard warp
nacelle to a spiraling fighter.

"Our boys are fighting well today. Send the signal."
he ordered. A command went out on a Confederate frequency,
and the Confederate fighters currently fighting began
breaking and engaging their afterburners. "Decloak and open
fire, full volley."

----

The Confederate fighters had made a good fight of it,
downing 10 Starfleet fighters for only 3 of their own. Lt.
Thorpe executed a violent roll as he came out of a strafing
pass that skimmed the saucer of an Excelsior class cruiser,
the ship's phaser bursts little more than faint flashes at
his 6 o'clock as he effortlessly evaded the ship's fire.
His wingmen came up beside him, finished with their attacks
as well. Thorpe spied a Peregrine racing to attack another
Confederate fighter. He keyed his mike.
"Stick close, boys! We're gonna get that commie
puke!" he said.
Thorpe acclerated. The pursuing peregrine was
following the evading Confederate pilot through a wide, high
G turn, trying to cut inside his loop. His lock warnings
began screaming suddenly. The Federation pilot twisted
around and checked his 6. Damn. The 3 Confederate fighters
were coming up aft of him, weaving back and forth. He could
almost see down the snouts of the stubby phaser cannons
slung close to their fuselages. A burst of phaser fire
lashed his aft shields, taking them out. The fed pilot
kicked his craft up in a sharp, spiraling climb.
Thorpe stayed with the fed, his wingmen breaking off
and coming in from the sides. He fired again, the phasers
scything past the Peregrine's fuselage and wings. Thorpe
had the Fed dead to rights. He depressed his trigger again,
riddling the Federation fighter with a full burst that
sheared off a wing and blasted the engines to scrap. The
Feddie pilot had tried to turn at the last second, sparing
his ship from immediate destruction. However, the small
vessel's containment went up, scattering the ship
everywhere. Thorpe's headset crackled as he flew through
the explosion.
"All fighters, this is the CNS Bloodhawk. Get your
asses out of there now! We're gonna cook these Starfleet
pukes!"

<this is a bit of secret confed tech- They have found a way to
communicate while cloaked>

"Acknowledged, Bloodhawk;" said Thorpe, a bit uneasy
that he was talking to someone he couldn't see. He radioed
his squadron, and told them to get out of there. The
fighters began breaking off. They lit off their
afterburners, streaking out of range just as another series
of flashes bloomed behind them.

----

The starfleet ships were taken by surprise as the 4
Confederate destroyers dropped their cloaks directly aft,
and unleashed a spread of torpedoes. The missiles rocketed
in, their warheads detonating in close proximity to the
starfleet ships. Space was filled with corsuscating blue
fire for several instants, and the Starfleet vessels seemed
to be caught in the grip of the hand of God. One of the
Galaxy-class starships appeared through the crackling
energy, it's shields gone, hull wreathed in sparks as it's
running lights flickered and died. One of the /Excelsiors/
suffered the same fate, it's systems blown by the tremendous
EMP discharge. Just then, the 2nd squadron of fighters
appeared, accelerating towards the enemy at full thrust,
with fresh loads of antiship missiles. The remaining
Federation ships turned and fled to warp.
