Don't take that to mean that they said that it was GOOD... Some parents just never say *anything* about the matter.Darth Wong wrote:Are you shitting me? *THAT* is a good parent, IMO. But kids who grow up in smokers' households are more likely to grow up to be smokers anyhow. -shrugs-My landlord was a smoker when I lived near the Michigan border, and he was absolutely adamant that his kids never start smoking (of course, he came off a a hypocrite because he couldn't quit smoking himself, and I strongly suspect that they are probably smoking by now, but at least he knew enough to tell his kids that it's a bad fucking idea).

Growing up watching my parents smoke instilled a fascination with smoking in me. I wanted to know so bad what it was like, how you inhaled it, what it tasted like.
I'd never tell my parents this, it would break their hearts. They tried to keep my brothers and I from smoking, I was just too sneaky.
BTW, I've tried the patch. It made me break out in hives. Great big ones. Tried Wellbutrin, too.
As Durandal said, though, you don't quit until you really want to. Such is addiction.

I think that it's because you'd come off as a hypocrite telling them that it's bad and not to do it, while you still do.Darth Wong wrote:Are you shitting me? A good parent would stop smoking as soon as he knew had a baby on the way. Like it or not, telling your kid never to smoke while yourself being a smoker doesn't give you much credibility in the child's eye. Those who grow up in smoking households are more likely to start smoking themselves, regardless of what their parents tells them.verilon wrote:*THAT* is a good parent, IMO. It's simply not responsible to expose your child to a bad habit like that right off the bat, nor is it responsible (or even ethical, hell it should be illegal) for a pregnant woman to smoke when she has a baby on the way which she intends to have.

My smoking indulgence is entirely limited to a single Coronau which I have on Mardi Gras day as part of the celebration; a fine smoke to savour as a farewell to the flesh (so to speak). The only other cigar I've had outside of that was one passed out the first opening day of our new baseball park back in '93. I've sampled pipes, hand-rolled cigarettes, and once a brand-name ciggy (and a vile one at that) over twenty years ago. But the Habit never developed with me and I doubt the total amount of tobacco I've consumed in my lifetime would even add up to a pound.

True that, but still a good parent. No one ever said there was no room for improvement.Durandal wrote:A good parent would stop smoking as soon as he knew had a baby on the way. My dad gave up a 30 year smoking habit after I was born. When they found out I had asthma and actually "died" three times, he gave up completely.Durandal wrote:A good parent would stop smoking as soon as he knew had a baby on the way. He said all he did was carry a pencil between his fingers as if it was a cigarette, and eventually he stopped. I guess the security of an alleged cigarette in hand was enough!

I'm not a smoker, but i live with a very heavy smoker. My dad puffs out 40 a day, thats while working 12 hours a day in a non-smoking building, Bombardier Aerospace. My mother used to smoke but she's been off them for 9 months now. She really wanted to give them up but found it hard, especially living with a smoker like my dad. Eventually she went and got the patches but they made my mum sick so she just went cold turkey. She's doing really well, she saved enough money that she's away in Newcastle christmas shopping with the money she saved.

Oh, did O mention that at least 90% of people in New Orleans smoke, and at least 50% of those chain-smoke like motherfucking machineguns? They seem to be just as deadly too...

Good deal, man!Dorsk 81 wrote:All this talk about cannibalism got me thinking about the quality of meat. This in turn lead me to creating a thread where I can boast about how I've given up smoking! I used ot smoke 20 rollies per day and in 2 weeks I've stopped completely. It was difficult to say the least.
Anyone else here ever given up smoking? How'd you do it?
Anyone here still smoke? Do you wanna give up?
Thoughts, opinons, etc, please.
I smoked a pack every 2 days from october '99 to february '03. I quit the day after a girl I was going out with fucked one of my best friends. I was so distraught, I decided not to smoke anymore (I know - weird reaction) and haven't touched a cig since then. I had been trying to quit seriously for months before that. I had quit once before that but stupidly put a cig. in my mouth and thus got re-addicted.
I noticed I got sick both times after quitting cigarettes because of all the tar coming off my lungs. You might get sick too, and feel quite shitty but when the sickness passes you'll be far less susceptible to starting up again. I would suggest to start jogging or excercising or taking up a physical activity. That will help you to not miss breathing smoke. Also, don't let yourself get too drunk for about a month. You'll get hammered and lose self-control and chain-smoke a pack and you'll be back at sqare one again.

I have never smoked. Both of my parents smoked, and this is why I chose never to smoke; because it bothered the hell out of me. I particularly resent the times when they would smoke in the car with the windows rolled up! I would also stay in my room because the living room was smoky.
My parents quit (after they divorced, which leads me to wonder if they would ever have quit if they remained together), and one day my mom pulled the refridgerator away from the wall so that she could paint back there. If I hadn't been convinced before, I would have been convinced then and there that smoking is nasty shit. The power cord had of course accumulated a lot of dust over the years, being tucked in a corner of the kitchen, and we all know that dustbunnies can tend to form in such places.
These were tarbunnies. Like dustbunnies, only a pure brown color. They covered the power cord. It looked so fucking weird and disgusting that I was afraid to touch it.
I guess I'm fortunate that my parents managed to create an environment that made me loathe smoking.

I smoked from the first day of college until about October of my sophomore year, when I dropped the habit cold turkey to impress a girl. We went out for 14 months, during which time I never had a single cigarette. Then the day we broke up, I bought a pack and I've been smoking since.

I remember begging my dad to stop smoking when I was 7 or so as the education system was fairly emphatic on smoking being not a good habit when I was little, it was only the occassional cigar or cigarette and never in the house, only when we went out to the pub as a family, but I think the combination of me begging and the old parental responsibility won through, and he's never smoked since.
