Deus X: How good is it?

Post by 2000AD »

This is not about the new Invisible War game.

I've noticed Deus X going for fairly cheap in local game shops so i was wondering if i should get it. As i have a limited budget on games i'll ask the following:

Is it a good game?
Will it take a reasonable amount of time to complete?
Is it replayable?

Yes, a very good game, high immersion
Takes a good lot of time :)
Is replayable.

While tastes do vary, most people I talked with REALLY liked it. Hell - it got a POSITIVE review on somethingawful! That alone should tell you something.

It's got an immersive future world, a somewhat complicated (to a certain point) plot, a cool main character, and gives you an impression of non-linearity (eg. you can approach quests in different ways, but the game itself is still pretty linear)

You should be able to get a demo somewhere, so I suggest you try it. If you're not entirely convinced.
2000AD wrote:Will it take a reasonable amount of time to complete?
Yes.
2000AD wrote:Is it replayable?
I completed it three times. There's not much left after the second run-through, though. Some dialogues may be different, you may do some things another way, but not that much.

All in all though, I'd recommend Deus Ex immediately to anyone who asks. It's a 9/10 game for me :)

I am playing it again, and for some reason, the second mission is totally different.

I'm thinking it's because I picked a different skin.

No, you've probably done something serious in the first mission that changed the second one. Killed the commander, maybe? Or maybe you're just doing the quests in a different order? :)

Or gone in the back way through the vending machine instead of the front way, or vice versa?

Three basic ways to do it. Knock out the terrorists, kill them, or kill everyone. Option number one is a pain in the ass to do without losing some hostages, but it can be done.

I might have actually done it that way... or maybe just killed one of them...

I know I shot all of them in sight with tranqs, then went in the vents, killed one guy, and dropped down because I got the all clear.

I usually knock out the patrolling ones, then sneak to the hostages and load them onto the train without touching the rest of the bad guys.

Without the hostages, I say they can blow up the platform if they want to :)

I think it's Knights of the Old Republic. It's the only game I can think of with the initials KOTOR.

That's HK-35 (or something-I forget the actual name: a character from Knights of the Old Republic)

Of course you don't NEED any of the skills. You can pretty much go through the game, running and blasting at everything, like a mindless little Quake-drone. You've shown your colors, Droney.

Don't want to use? Sure, if you want to make the game unnecessarily more difficult, go right ahead.

Can't use effectively? I don't know about you, but running around and 4x normal speed with super healing, with the Dragon sword, slicing bad guys to hell, is very, very easy to do, effectively.

You're just inept. Get over it. Upset that you can't hold a hundred rounds for your rocket launcher?
D The weapons are annoying and ugly
Ya ever seen any of the newer, higher-tech weapon proposals going around? They make the Deus Ex designs look so good in comparison that it'll give you a stiffy.
E. THe music is crap.
Not enough power chords or screaming teenagers, Punkboy? Or are you one of these (c)rap fans that doesn't consider it music unless the lyrics are about killing whitey and bangin' your ho?
F. The plot isn't even that good.
I'd love to know what criteria you used to make that objective conclusion...

I can think of a few reasons he might not like it.

1) He never left Liberty Island.

2) He didn't get the plot because he blew everyone up before talking to them.

3) He couldn't figure out that stealth tactics usually work better than running in with guns blazing.

4) weapons sucked because he forgot to turn his monitor on.

5) sound sucked because he forgot to turn his speakers on.

They do? Well, what d'ya know

Actually, you can do both in Deus Ex, and there are no real punishments for choosing one way or the other. And THIS is why the game rocks so much :)
Yuri Prime wrote: 4) weapons sucked because he forgot to turn his monitor on.
You know, I could actually agree with him about two guns. The assault rifle and...the pistol!

The assault rifle was one of the dumbest, non-ergonomic guns I've ever seen in a computer game. I mean - it's 7.62 NATO and has an EXTREMELY short barrel. It would be impossible to control.

The pistol, on the other hand, is a very nice gun to have, but why can't you attach a silencer to it? You can do it with a goddamned 30-06 sniper rifle!

I loved Deus-X. My fondest memory is of the level where you have to storm into a police station, activate some stuff on the roof and then exit the building (with the alarm activated). My brother did it first by killing everyone inside the building and kept saying it was too hard for me to do it. Me, after reaching the roof I just jumped over the border and ran away. I still remember the petrified face of my brother..
