Well, I know I should have put this in the Writer's Workshop forum, but I'm not a member of it right now. I put in the application in the summer, but eh. Maybe later.
Anyway, here's the shortest version of the story. For my intro to Creative Writing, we had to write a short story. The assignment had a minimum of 5 pages; I wrote 18. My teacher, along with many of my classmates, said I should work more on the story, expanding it to a novel, which all good in my mind. But I thought: Maybe I should publish the short work?
Secondly, I'm thinking I should send something in because I want to go to grad school for Creative Writing (instead of Literature), and one school that I looked at accepts 10 fiction, 10 poetry applicants per year. So I thought.. get working now.
So my question is: does anyone know any sites or publishers which I can send my current short work to? Any help would be great.

Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

not every publisher needs a sample though. some of them only take completed manuscripts, others want query letters as to whether or not they're interested in the work, or query letters and a sample chapter. it varies from publisher to publisher. anyways, here's a few more links that might help.

The best route to publishing short fiction for the first time is to contact the editors of the sci-fi/fantasy magazines, such as Asimov's. A literary agent is more likely to represent you, and large publishing houses are more likely to accept your work if you've had prior publishing experience and prior exposure. This truism is just as true now as it was before the days of online publication.
