WHEEEEEEEEE!Topic: My little sister shot a carjacker
By:ISC
She left her nice, "secure" federal building where she works and had some guy jump her as she was getting into her Cherokee. He had something in his hand pointed at her wrapped up in a t shirt and said, "give me the keys bitch or I'll kill you"
She had just unlocked the door and was climbing into the jeep when he accosted her. She dropped the keys and while acting like she was reaching to pick them up, reached for her 9mm instead. He said "don't reach for the mace" she turned and gave him 2 hollowpoints in the chest.
She paid attention when I trained her, and remembered the following things:
1) if you are going to shoot once, you might as well shoot twice just in case
2) call the law right away afterwards so it doesn't look like you wanted him to die
3) a car jacker doesn't want to shoot you inside the car, he wants to drive it and thats alot easier if there isn't blood and brains all over the seat. Make your move before you get out of the car if possible. It also makes it easier to explain why you didn't retreat out of the area.
4) be able to articulate that you were in fear of your life.
5)have your gun in a ready to use condition.
She used a keltec P11, which she chose for a few reasons. It has no safety, so there is one less thing to worry about in a stressful situation, it has a very heavy and long trigger pull, which makes it all but impossible to have an accidental discharge or for her young daughter to shoot it even intentionally. Her name is kelly and she liked the name of the pistol. It was also affordable.
I'm just glad her name isn't laurie, I don't know if I could have talked her out of a Lorcin.
It turns out the guy had a long record, lived in the homeless shelter 2 blocks away, and had a pointy stick under the t shirt. If he lives I think he won't be carjacking anyone anytime soon.

Woman shoots her alleged carjacker in New Orleans
The Associated Press
October 25, 2003
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A homeless man remained in intensive care Friday after he allegedly tried to carjack a woman but was foiled when she pulled a gun and shot him twice in the chest.
Thorlief Thorbjornsen, 42, allegedly approached the woman in a parking lot at about 5 p.m. Thursday in the central business district, near federal and state courthouses.
The woman, 32, told police that Thorbjornsen indicated he had a handgun and demanded she get out of her Jeep Cherokee. She reached into the center console of her Jeep, pulled out a 9 mm pistol and shot Thorbjornsen twice in the torso, said Capt. Marlon Defillo, a police spokesman.
Thorbjornsen did not have a weapon.
Defillo said police will not book the woman but as a formality will turn the case over to the district attorney’s office for review.
When Thorbjornsen is released from the hospital, he will be arrested and booked with attempted carjacking, Defillo said.

She's doing fine, spent an hour being questioned by very sympathetic cops who didn't forget that she was the victim of a crime. This actually happened over a week ago, since then she got a .45 from her boyfriend because she won't get her 9 back for quite awhile. They will keep it until the punk goes to trial, which won't happen until he heals up, assuming that he lives. He has been operated on twice and is in intensive care.

You can indeed get a permit in Louisiana to carry a concealed weapon. Here is the gist of it:
http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/louisiana
It doesn't mention in the article if the gun was on her or in the car. In Louisiana, you are legally aloud to keep a gun in the car for protection WITHOUT a permit. You are NOT however aloud to carry one into a Federal building, which she would have done if it had been on her person.

Yep, it'd happen here. Everyone would go apeshit, but the government wouldn't care.Montcalm wrote:The same would happen here too and probably AustraliaEmbracer Of Darkness wrote:If that had happened in England, she would've most likely been thrown in jail. I hate my country.
Good on her though.

Nope.kojikun wrote:Aren't hollowpoint rounds illegal to sell to the general public?
There might be certain kinds of hollowpoints that have been made illegal for supposedly being "too lethal" but you can still buy hollowpoints.
There are probably different laws for different states.

It's Louisiana man. I can probably find working parts for a Quad 40mm AA gun and start shooting up airplanes right by the airport.kojikun wrote:Aren't hollowpoint rounds illegal to sell to the general public?

Seeing as how she thought that her car was more valuble than a human life, she'd deserve to be in there.Embracer Of Darkness wrote:If that had happened in England, she would've most likely been thrown in jail. I hate my country. :x

And considering that violent crime has escalated to point that the police are finally having to carry fire arms, the only people these fire arm control laws hurt are the law abiding citizens who want to protect themselves. Parliment doesn't seem to understand that people intent on breaking the law aren't going to be diswaded by gun control laws.Embracer Of Darkness wrote:If that had happened in England, she would've most likely been thrown in jail. Considering that she was in fear for her life and, for all she knew, he was planning to kill her as soon as she was away from the car, she was completely justified in shotting him.

Considering what happened, I'd call it her car PLUS the emotional trauma the afflicts every victim PLUS the (at least perceived) possibility of injuries up to and including death versus the normal value of a human life MINUS the deduction for him being an obvious asshole and criminal.Drooling Iguana wrote:Seeing as how she thought that her car was more valuble than a human life, she'd deserve to be in there.
I won't be very surprised if the former added up to be bigger than the latter. If I had a gun, I'd have computed it the same way.
In any case, the Golden Rule (not perfect, but a good start) says that treat people as you would expect to be treated. If you infringe another person's rights, expect to have yours infringed.
IMHO, When you conduct assault in an area that allows concealed weapons for self-defense, you are voluntarily forfeiting your right to live. Since you had already forfeited your right (whether you know it or not)...
A question: If the woman put the assaulter's life at risk without the gun. Maybe she was a super-expert at unarmed combat or whatever, but the man is now in the hospital and at risk for his head injuries. Would you say the woman placed her car above that scum's life, and thus deserved a long prison sentence?

No, but I would say that if she was a super expert at unarmed combat, she has a responsibility not to use killing force when less will do the same job, and she would be aware of this difference, as this sort of thing is heavily emphasised by all major self defence establishments. Bad example, I think, you can get lucky with a gun and kill accidentally, if you know self defence, then you know what minimum force is, and when it should be used.

Yeah, that example was pretty crummy...
And I was just waiting for someone to point this out. But it was the best one I could come with short of sleep, harried by a major assignment due tomorrow and bored near to death by my lecturer on short notice. So all I could hope for was that the underlying intent of my question got through.
Besides, under adrenaline filled conditions, if it was your first real fight, I wonder whether even the best unarmed combat training could gurantee the trainee would select the correct amount of force and avoid hammering the guy on something like the hard corner of something metal.
I was trying to see exactly where his objection is. Maybe his objection is just "she used a gun (admittedly a very offensive weapon with few truly defensive methods for use even in theory) for self-defense" and it'd be OK if it were just a result from an unarmed defense. Maybe he just thinks she should let that twerp have the car. I really don't know, so I'm curious.

Based on my use-of-force training as an MP, the lady was absolutely justified in shooting that guy. she even double tapped him center mass. Perfect. she met what she percieved as deadly force being potentially used against her with deadly force preemptively. Meh, idiot shouldn't have tried to carjack her. Hope he's removed from the Gene pool.
