AIDS no longer carries the stigma or fear it did in the 1980's and early 90's.
People under 25 probably dont have much memory of when the crisis broke.
Plus, as you mentioned the "..it will never happen to me..." mentality is strong in many. I've never been like that with AIDS or sex in general. Unless your partner cheats on you AIDS is mostly a disease that can be fully prevented.

it pisses me off that so much life and potential is wasted by a disease that could be stopped cold by something as simple as common sense and self control.

This is true of so many human behaviors. Seatbelts, driving fast in the rain, etc. The worst part is when such actions hurt a child.

And it's not a local trend

Most new cases are probably lack of education, but in developed countries it's more likely to be apathy combined with ignorance about the level of risk.

When you said "self control", did you mean abstinence?

by self control i mean not fucking someone before you know them well enough to learn their health and sexual history. I'm not a prude, and i'm not naieve, i know abstinance is not practical. But that doesn't mean you should go around fucking randoms, even with a condom. Comdoms fail 3% of the time.

BURDEN OF EPIDEMIC

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the worst affected region with about 3.2 million new infections and 2.3 million deaths in 2003. Southern Africa is home to about 30 percent of people living with HIV/AIDS, yet the region has less than two percent of the global population.

In Botswana and Swaziland the infection rate of HIV/AIDS among adults is 40 percent. One in five pregnant women in some African countries is infected with the virus, which is more easily transmitted from men to women than the other way around.

"In two short decades HIV/AIDS has tragically become the premier disease of mass destruction," Dr Jack Chow, of the World Health Organization (WHO) told a news conference.

"The death odometer from HIV/AIDS is now at 8,000 a day and accelerating."

Piot said the epidemic, fueled by intravenous drug use and unsafe sex, is spreading in India, China, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Estonia and Latvia. And he predicted that it could be years before the back of the epidemic is broken in terms of new infections

And yet I can still see many saying it's not as big a problem as people claim and it only truly affects African shitholes.
