It's amazing how many people that are against the death penalty are suddenly for it when a family member is murdered, or people that are for total gun control turn against it when it comes to their own personal safety.

It's not about the emotional connection to the victim; it's about the certainty of guilt. In this case, there's simply no question that he did it. But in so many cases, particularly in the southern US, the trials are a joke. You have men being convicted solely on a single eyewitness' testimony, for example, and eyewitness testimony is extremely unreliable.

Do not go leaping to unfounded conclusions about the reason that I might state a preference for the death penalty in this case.
