USSR National Anthem, whats going on?

Post by Omega-13 »

I was just watching CNN, and it was showing Putin getting off an airplane and there was a small marching band waiting for him, and to the great joy of my ears I heard the USSR national anthem, are they still using that!?

Same tune, different lyrics. You can't tell the difference if nobody's singing.
I prepared Explosive Runes today.

They went back to the Soviet-era anthem a few years ago. They got new lyrics. Amazingly, the guy who wrote the old lyrics was still around and made some new ones (IIRC).
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.

You preferred that no-lyrics shit that Yeltsin had? Everyone complained that they couldn't sing along during sports events and etc, that's why it was changed, that's what I heard off the news. Besides, the anthem has always been great. New lyrics reflecting new era, even better.

Hmm, I don't think I'm totally familiar with the Russian national anthem. Was that the same song they were singing in Hunt for Red October? Because that song kicked major ass :)

What they needed was to add lyrics, not change the thing back to the old one. The fact that they had almost 10 years, and didn't do it shows you how efficient we are as a country. Putin, however, is nostalgic for the good old days. The only problem is, not everyone had it as nice as he did.

Perhaps, but did you like the tune? Everyone seems to have thought it stank, even my Czarist Russian friend (don't ask, he has pictures of Nick II in his room, it's really odd) ...

A lot of people seem nostalgic for the bad ol days- I guess he can do it because he plays off that sort of feeling.

Yes, it's that one (as they turn on the caterpillar drive and triumphantly veer away from the evil capitalist oppressor machine).

I first heard the Soviet anthem in Primary School on a cheapie Mac computer's inbuilt speaker. Even then it sounded good, better than any other national anthem I've heard - though strangely, East Germany's Risen from Ruins sounds good to me too, just a hint of the tragic.

BTW, what's that other Russkie-sounding song they sang at the beginning as the Red October pulled to sea?

I don't know, but I found this at imdb. IMO the music in this movie is absolutely great.

"The Anthem of the Soviet Union"
Music by A. V. Aleksendrov

"Payoff"
by Basil Poledouris

"Putin's Demise"

"I'ts a Long Way to TYPPERARY"

Hymn to Red October is the one at the start.

It wasn't that bad. Not as powerful as the old USSR one, but definitely better than God Save the Czar.

He's doing more than that. Considering what he's done to the press, and the fact that half the government are now his KGB buddies, I'm saying he wants a taste of the old gensek power.

Have a very nice day.

Best one of the lot, IMO

Pretty good vocals only, for that Hunt for Red October feel

The Red Army Choir treatment is a gaping omission from the 2000 anthem, unfortunately; I guess it hasn't been put on mp3 yet. The standard Soviet Union one is still good for that though.

Now that is very cool 8)

I'm sure they'd have the Red Army version in a compilation down at say HMV on Pitt Street, huge selection if you've never been.
