Cubicle Dweller?

Post by Chardok »

Got to thinking today...I've worked in many types of places, From outdorrs (Construction) to indoors, (Fast food), Plants/factories (Machine operator), to cars, (MP) and I found myself curious as to where the denizens of SDN work, I know some of your jobs, like YB is a Ranger ( I think) and Ver is a web designer (BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN HE LIKES IT), and Einhander...well...he lives in Lousiana... but Please take this thread and let everyone know a bit about what you do to keep food on the table, and what environment you work in. Do you like it? why or why not? (.....I almost feel I should add Do not pick up your pencils until I finish reading the instructions.... 8) )

Here's me:

For the first time in my life, I work in an office setting complete with cubicles ala Dilbert. I work for a mortgage company, as anyone who reads the vent thread knows. I like it immensely, by far the best place I have ever worked, and this is the most money I've ever made. I can't believe they actually PAY me to sit and answer the phone all day! [einy] phun! [/einy]

I mooch off the government.
In other words I'm an unemployed student, which is working out fairly well for me now. I did work as a bouncer for a while, but ended up quitting as it really wasnt helping me with my depression and the company I was working for was a fucking joke at times. A lot of regulations they expected you to follow and then them not following them themselves.

For the time being I spend my time working up scripts and feature articles for my course.

I have a nice big office/lab filled with toys to play with. Toolmakers microscope, optical comparator, digital indicators, height gages, a surface plate, micrometers and calipers, tensile strengh testers. I have a workbench with electrical outlets and a compressed ait port and a nice desk with a computer, pictures of my wife, a plastic and die cast porsche, and a neat little model of a french 75mm cannon. Often times i have my minions working in the room as well.

I'll have a cubicle until Monday, which is my last day at Migliara Kaplan. Then, until I find another jobby to do during the day, my main jobs of being a music teacher and a cute coffeeshop chick will keep me safely out of the realm of Cubicleland.

I work in a office/warehouse for a small publishing company. Its a very casual and informal setting and I've been the office manager with my own office (whooo!) here since September '02. Its been fun to hire my own minions and interns and last year I think I may have been having too much fun at work, so I'm trying to be more professional now.

One of my jobs is in a cubical at a computer & IT solutions company. It bores my out of my mind like you wouldn't believe. My other job is a bicycle mechanic at the local bike shop. This is fun work as long as the asshole customers don't ruin my day, and even then it ain't too bad. That job would be indoors, but I get to stand or sit as much as feel like. In the summer half the job's outdoors since we have to test ride all the bikes we build up and fix.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either. :P

Cubicle?
Some of us would give our right arm for a cubicle!

Ahh, the privacy of flimsy walls...

Open plan office for me.

Open offices rock! Well, unless everyone else is an asshole or a religious fruitcake in which case things can kinda suck. My Canada Customs job was in an open plan office when I wasn't inspecting packages or viewing porn in the screening booth.

I'm a secretary/receptionist. I have a reception desk, and a POS PC that's older than some of the members here.

Everything you say is cute!

But for me, I hope I NEVER get into a job with a cubicle. Given I'm hoping to become a scientist of the highest calibre, I doubt it'd happen anyway.

Add another one for open offices.
I have my own desk, what more do I need? Not that I'm AT my desk more than half the time, mind you.
Plus, I like to see the faces of my co-workers when I respond to a random request for information by half-yelling 'PLEASE don't hit me again'...
NTM as long as I can goof off with the guys I can maintain the illusion I'm doing this because I like it, not because I need the money...
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

Obviously you don't read much in the venting thread, m'boy... *smiles and kisses AV's cheek*

Yeah, cubicle are pretty sucky. It's better to be an instrumental music teacher and have a whole wing all to yourself. :D
