Why SCAdians Don't Get Mugged

Post by LadyTevar »

This was posted to the Æthelmærc listserv, and after SirNit and I picked ourselves up out of the floor we decided to share.
One of my friends lives in NYC and participates in the SCA. He's
stereotypical Viking, 6'7" tall, LONG blonde hair, about 350 - 400
lbs of solid muscle, and looks every bit of it.

Well, he was going to a meet in full getup with long cloak and battle
axe and sitting on the subway.. hunched over leaning on the axe with
the cloak pulled over it so he wouldn't scare anybody.

Lo and behold some little punk comes up... MAYBE 5'2", 120 lbs
soaking wet, and brandishes a knife saying "GIMME YOUR MONEY!"
Naturally my friend sits there...somewhat befuddled at the balls of
this punk. "GIMME YOUR *bleepin* MONEY OR ELSE!" My friend stands
up.... and up....and UP. Raising the battle axe over his head, he
screams at the top of his lungs:
"BLOOD FOR ODIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

At this point, the fellow passengers learn the true sound of terror.
Not a scream, no curses, just a simple little "urk" as the guy leaves
a wet spot as he's bolting for anywhere but here.

A couple weeks later my friend is at a club in the men's room, doing
what all guys do when they've had a bit of ale, and looks over and at
the next stall is that SAME PUNK! Up for a bit of a laugh, my friend
leans over, and quietly whispers in the dude's ear "Blood for Odin".

The cops catch up with the punk a couple blocks away.. screaming bloody
murder, running like the hounds of hell are after him, with his pants
around his ankles.

Reminds me of the story of a Japanese businessman who while living in Australia got into the whole SCA thing. Based out of Sydney he'd just spent the past week at a RenFair in full samurai get up. Next monday he goes into the office unaware that he had (simply by force of habit) attatched his katana to his belt.

He heads into a negotiation session and again without thinking, takes his katana off his belt, sits it on the table, inches the blade and then begins negotiations.

Only after he'd gotten the contract, reattatched sword to his belt and left did someone point out to him that he had it with him.

  Aggressive Negotiations, anyone?

of course, there's always the fun of hearing a gentle called into Their Majesties Court, and having to wait whilst the gentle disarms. I've seen one person remove a knife from each wrist, two from the belt, and four from the boots.

Cute. I would have joined the SCA down here if most of the decent people hadn't left the at the end of the year before I got to uni. As it was the SCA here is still about but its a sad sad thing. And anyway, I still get in a fair bit of smacking people around with swords and other bits, but without the Medieval backdrop.

IMO, she should make a thread about it for the general population here. I'm interested too. :D

I googled the SCA site itself should give adequate info. I'll be browsing once I'm done with schoolwork though. ~Jason

*Chuckle.* Oh, this brings back great memories. I was driving home from a meet once, at about 10:00 PM. I'd changed into my normal clothes, but I still had the quarterstaff sitting in the van. I pulled into a McDonald's to grab something to eat, when two punks come up to me as I'm just getting out of the van. They want my money. I reach back between the seats for my trusty staff. They were dumb enough to pull knives. When we were done one had two cracked ribs, the other had a broken wrist, and both had concussions. Fun fun!

Well, as C'boath has already put up the SCA Website, I don't think I can really add much more to it. The SCA Website has all the information to answer your basic questions, as well as direct you to local SCA chapters in your area.

Honestly, the SCA Website is the best place to go.

Oh.. did I mention that the website is www.sca.org?

:D

I'm wondering one little thing: Does that 400-lbs-of-solid-muscle-and-long-blond-hair SCAdian Nordic God happen to be on the prowl for a nice tryst in the woods? Cuz I'd sure like to go on said 'tryst in the woods' with him! :teeth:

Sorry, Ein... I don't know the guy personally, but there is a fine choice of tall, handsome 'blue feathers' to be found in the SCA.

Oh... Traditionally, a Blue Feather would be worn by a troubadour or player to signify that he was not interested in the opposite sex. The Gay and Lesbians of the Society adopted this custom as a way to silently declare themselves. Thus, anyone wearing a dark blue-dyed (usually raven) feather at a SCA event is fair game, Ein.

Well, LT, you can go to SCA Website to see if there's a shire still going in your area.

But I've only gone to 3 Pennsics in the whole 14 years I've been a SCAdian. Too expensive, and I'm too much of a softy to enjoy spending a week in a tent with no (hot) showers in a place where the temperature range from 40C to 100C daily. Not to mention the 'Pennsic Storms', where tents often get knocked down or flooded.
Still.... for a week we're the biggest town in Butler Township.

Again proving why the SCA rocks.

Great people, and certainly the events are the largest gatherings of honorable and nice people in the modern world at this point. Besides, where else can you feel perfectly safe totally unarmed around a few hundred people with enough bladed weapons to take over a city?

This is making me want to try to go to some of the winter events out here, but my cold tolerance is a joke. I am doing sword training though.

This is why the SCA garb is wonderful, Hyp.
Ever look at how the Vikings were dressed for the weather? Long pants, with high fur-to-the-inside boots laced tightly to them. Two or more knee-length long-sleeved tunics, layered and belted. Fur hats, and heavy sheep-skin lined woolen cloaks, with wolf-fur lined hoods to keep frost from forming near the face. That kept them warm in the worst of winters, and I understand this is what the Alaskan SCA members try to imitate.

As for my neck of the woods, where winter temps usually range 20-35F, if I'm going to be outside, themal leggings under the heavy linen undress, covered by the long-sleeved overdress, with a surcoat over that, and a woolen square belted over all, with enough to serve as a hood. Tada! Medieval Winter Garb!

See, winter garb involves something called 'money' something I lack rather badly. *grumbles*

There's a reason I have a pirate persona, it's all I can afford. The best part of my garb is my sword, and that still has the visible effects of corrosion from the last owner's bad handling of it. Granted the blade is rather special to me, so that part matters not.

Granted the lack of money has definately earned me some complements on my garb, namely the very period looking leather pouch that I made during the second weekend of Ren Fair this summer. One has to get creative when they don't have money. In this case it involved some old tools, about an hour, and some scraps of leather I bought for $3 the week before.

It's also this lack of money which is keeping me from getting into fighting, which is what I want to do, fight heavy with a glaive. (closest SCA-legal weapon to a staff, which is my weapon of preferance)

Btw, winter really sucks for me, I am left with whatever I managed to keep around thru the summer, for the next 6 months or so. Half a year I make money, the other half I get nothing. It sucks, and it's cold.
