What kind of comics do you like/read?

Post by Tribun »

I wondered, which style of comics, if you like comics, did you like and read? I know that there is a wave of mangas in the last years, but it hasn't interested me. Others read superherocomics from Marvel or DC. And there are still so many different styles that I can't list them all here. So what kind of comics, if you read comics, do you read?

I for my part read mostly franco-belgian comics, of which I think that they have a extremly good quality. And I think of the strikingly realistic pictures as a true indicator of good art. I have put a picture of one of my favourite ones below.

i've had the chance to read some of marvel's newer stuff lately, and i've found that their Ultimates series is pretty good. the style's changed considerably from ten years ago, and it gives their universe a much needed continuity. far as DC comics goes, i've never been too big of a fan, though lately i've been checking out some of their justice league and superman comics. decent, though i prefer marvel's style of storytelling.

About the only other comic series i read is the Sandman, which imo is one of the best series written. that, and books of magic, a spinoff of the sandman comics (though The Endless aren't really present, it takes place in the same world). I've skimmed through some manga, though the only thing that really interests me in that area is ranma 1/2. beyond that i just don't care for manga too much. but. . .that's about all that i read as far as comics are concerned. mainly because my local bookstore has them available and they don't mind people lounging around for an hour or two flipping through their stuff. ;)

I read manga exclusively. I like Masamune Shirow's stuff.

Does anyone read Scud: The Disposable Assassin? It was the last comic series i was seriously into before i stoped reading around the late 90's. It started out as a b&w indie mag but became fairly popular and had a really shitty video game based on it. The premise was that robotic assassins could be purchased from vending machines and the title character is one that goes renegade and takes freelance jobs; very adult, dark humor oriented, with overtones of Sergio Leone and a strong japanese influence. I have no idea what happened to the mag (they had a very cool mobster spin-off from it) but i can assure you that the first few years were at least very cool, and each year seemed to get better than the last.

Infinity Gauntlet - holy shit that kicked so much ass when it came out! I was in my first year of being a rabid comic reader/collector and that series was very gripping.

I was into comics '90-'94 and my favorite comics were X-men, the Dark Empire I and II, WildC.A.T.s, Silver Surfer, X-O Manowar and Eternal Warrior (yeah I know, kiddy stuff)

Last comic I read was manga. Titled. Izumaki (I think that's how it's spelled.)

It scared the pants off me.

I've sorta given up on comics lately. :( They used to be good, but now I just feel the current trends aren't trying anymore.

For instance, I used to be collector of Spawn. I left after the shit Toddie Mac was constantly spewing into the stands every few months (for those familiar with the series I leave it up to you to determine when he "jumped the shark" so to speak).

Part of my dislike for current comic books are, among other things, the continuous story lines that are never resolved. Spawn was a good example, but before Spawn I collected Spiderman, and it happened there as well. Basically, the writers don't know where the story is going, so each week its just another stand alone adventure where the reset button gets pushed by the end few pages.

Here's an example of what I mean: Superman faces Doomsday; Superman dies. Superman then gets resurrected; Superman then defeats Doomsday. Superman then goes back to being what he was like before, and Doomsday is quietly forgotten.

I think comic books would be much better if they paid more attention to plot and consistency - and this not to suggest no comics books never do this, because there are a few and I love 'em - just the mainstream ones which I don't care to collect anymore.

I now generally collect trade paperbacks of miniseries, such as Watchmen, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (vol.II is out! Whoohoo!), Dark Knight Returns etc. I like it when the story is contained and there's no continuation of the storline (or if there is, it will be like LEXG and have a corresponding second volume with it's own self-contained story).

These days I'm reading some Vertigo stuff: Lucifer, Hellblazer, Y -the last man, are the ones I get every month. I've been buying some of Marvel's Ultimates line, and also X-statix and New X-men since a little while after Grant Morrison started writing it. The only manga I'm buying regularly these days are GTO and the new Battle Angel books. Other books I like but don't buy on account of not having that much money are Thor, Fantastic Four (both have had quite interesting storylines lately), and the new Transformers books. And then I also like to hang around Barnes & Noble, reading the manga and then not buying anything. 8)

The lamented SCUD has died and gone to Hollywood production hell. :x There were negotiations going to make some sorta movie out of it, but that all went to shit and now there's so much legal crap surrounding the whole thing that you can't even touch the thing without a six foot thick suit of lawyers. The graphic novels are still in production though, and they contain all the SCUD books produced; La Cosa Nostroid ended abruptly at about issue nine, I don't know if it was ever collected, and the Drywall & Oswald spinoff, AFAIK, only got to issue two. Sad really, VooDoo Ben was the bomb.

damn, thats a real shame. The last issues i bought were when they were having guest authors write and draw their own stand-alone issues. I always thought it seemed destined for a movie (hell, the mags had a "suggested soundtrack" for each issue)--too bad all of this money bullshit has to screw everything around. What a sad end to a great series.. :(

A British penpal turned me on to Viz, which I think has hilarious comics. Other than the very occasional comic book, I check Boondocks and Non Sequitur in the L.A. Times every day. Then of course, the greatest comics of all time can be found here:

Aside from the obligatory Calvin & Hobbes....

Every time I'm at the library I see if the latest "chapter" of Akira is available. The danish translation is in 20 books, roughly 100 pages each. The last I read was IIRC the 15th or 16th.

I also immensely enjoy the "Chronicles Of The Black Moon" series by Froideval.

Picking up a "Star Wars: Republic" compendium in Germany has got me interested in SW comics, although it's a hassle to find them in Denmark.

And for a few Danish series you likely haven't heard of:

1. "Strid" by Jakob Martin Strid, a politically-themed comic strip which runs in a Danish newspaper. (Strid, as well as a family name, also means "strife" in Danish - very appropiate)
2. Anything by Claus Deleuran, such as his comic-book version of Denmark's history (wherein he - among other things - postulates that every reference to Sweden in pre-medieval history actually refers to Scythia) and "The Travel To Saturn", a bizarre mixture of sci-fi and political satire which you'll have a hard time comprehending if you don't know much about 1970s-era European politics.
3. The works of the late, great Rune T. Kidde. You'll either love him or hate him. His humour is some of the most vulgar you'll ever see, but it can be occassionally funny.

"No, actually I would HATE to have a cookie, you vapid waste of inedible flesh!"
