Yes, money is a good thing for the Society, but you can find ways around it. :)
There's a reason I have a pirate persona, it's all I can afford. The best part of my garb is my sword, and that still has the visible effects of corrosion from the last owner's bad handling of it. Granted the blade is rather special to me, so that part matters not.

Granted the lack of money has definately earned me some complements on my garb, namely the very period looking leather pouch that I made during the second weekend of Ren Fair this summer. One has to get creative when they don't have money. In this case it involved some old tools, about an hour, and some scraps of leather I bought for $3 the week before.
There's good-ole SCA scrounging and jerry-rigging for you! :)
You can often find bolts of wool or wool blends very cheap when the fabric stores start gearing up for Spring and Summer clothing. That's how I got my woolens. In fall and Winter, you can find the light-weight linens and cotton/cotton blends cheap.
A great fabric for SCA is 'Trigger' cloth, a brand of broadcloth. It's a thick weave, good for anything that would take a lot of beating, like fighting tabards, banner flags, fencing garments, etc.
It's also this lack of money which is keeping me from getting into fighting, which is what I want to do, fight heavy with a glaive. (closest SCA-legal weapon to a staff, which is my weapon of preferance)

Can't help you here. :(
Btw, winter really sucks for me, I am left with whatever I managed to keep around thru the summer, for the next 6 months or so. Half a year I make money, the other half I get nothing. It sucks, and it's cold.
Have you tried getting together with one of the other Society members and work out a trade? One of the ladies might make you some garb, in exchange for something else. Bartering is often a great way to get things made you can't do yourself.

Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.
