Best comic strip ever
I noted last Sunday the return of Berke Breathed to the comics pages with his "Opus" strip. I was pleased to see it, though in truth I'd rather see all of the Bloom County characters return to the paper. Back in the 80s Bloom County was my favorite comic strip. I suppose it still is, though Calvin and Hobbes is hot on its heels.
I'm curious to see what strips most other people here consider the greatest of all time.

I am a Garfield fan, but I will give credit where credit is due. The best comic strip ever has to be Peanuts. The longevity, quality and volume of work done speaks for itself.

I've never understood this. I included Peanuts among the choices because, for some inexplicable reason, it has become a part of our pop culture. But I have never read a Peanuts strip that I thought was funny, and I don't personally know a single person who has. By contrast, Bloom County, The Far Side, and Calvin and Hobbes have all had me convulsed with uncontrollable laughter from time to time, and frequently had me laughing out loud, or at least chuckling.Macross wrote:I am a Garfield fan, but I will give credit where credit is due. I finally understood why Peanuts is so great, so, let me share it with you.Perinquus wrote: I've never understood this. Its not the humour. Its the adultness of the comic, expressed in so simple, innoncent a manner in the Lil Folks that gets to us.
Face it, which one of us hasn't been Charlie Brown once in his life? A loser, someone who never wins the ball game, unaccepted? Or a Linus, someone who needs a security blanket, even though he is more mature than Charlie? Or a Snoopy even, with our flights of fantasy, and where nothing can get us down?
In a way, its something that helps us to express our feelings, understand what's going on around us and cope with it.
Like what Charles said, its not about the gags. Its the story of the Peanuts gang, and more importantly, its entertainment.
Let him land on any Lyran world to taste firsthand the wrath of peace loving people thwarted by the myopic greed of a few miserly old farts- Katrina Steiner

[1] Calvin and Hobbes
[2] The Far Side
[3] Dilbert, though with a larger gap between it and the far side then that of the far side and Calvin and Hobbes

A hard choice. C&H comes first, but Farside is a close second. Both artists retired the same year; that really sucked.

I recommend anyone who didnt vote Calvin and Hobbes be hunted down and burned like the whitch that they are.
Greatest comic in the history of the universe. I still read all of my collections from time to time and after god knows how many re-reads they're still wonderful, inspiring, beautiful and most of all, they're still god damned funny!

Calvin and Hobbes for overall. Really wish the books we had for it didn't fall apart.
The Far Side gets a mention for the one I'm most likely to see posted outside a lab door.
Peanuts gets most legendary ending, since Schulz died just the day before his last strip was published.

Garfield is excruciatingly bad, and its inexcusable since there's like eight people who work on it. Calvin and Hobbes rules.
