EMP's in SW and ST

Post by 2000AD »

1) Are SW ships hardened against EMP
2) " Star trek ships " " "
3) Do ion cannon work along the same principles as EMP ?

I ask as EMPs have come up in a debate at another board and i haven't heard anything about them in past debates.

1) Yup.

In the ROTJ novelization it states that Admiral Ackbar flinched from a "thermonuclear explosion" immediately outside his bridge window just as the first wave of TIE fighters attacked.

And in the Land Calrissian Trilogy, we have this:

pg. 367:
The navy appeared at the fringes of the system, close enough to be fully detectable by the Renatasian defense sensors. They even let the local military lob a few primitive thermonuclear weapons at them to demonstrate the utter futility of resistance. The fleet's shields glowed briefly, restoring energy consumed by the voyage out, and that was that. Almost. Unfortunately for the Navy and high-technology aggressors everywhere in space and time, invasions cannot be conducted with continent-destroying weapons or from behind shields.

2) In TOS "Balance of Terror", a nuclear explosion caused damage to the Enterprise, and radiation exposure to some of the crew. In "Tomorrow Is Yesterday", Spock said a nuke would also cause damage to the unshielded ship.

3) Not exactly. It disrupts electroncs and a few systems for a time, but as we saw in the ROTJ novelization, an ion beam would work where an EMP wouldn't.

1) Undoubtly. They use nuclear weapons, have DEMP guns, and I recall various mentioning of radiation (hardware) shielding.

2) Well, shouldn't PTs give off EMP? That doesn't say either way though, since they damage ships. I'll leave it for Trek analysts..

3) Probably not. Ion = atom with net charge. EMP = radiation in the whole EM spectrum.
Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Extralife style.
