Same here, and if I recall correctly, all three artists retired with a year of each other.

I hope for the day that Watterson follows Larson's example and releases a Complete Collection. My Farside Complete Collection just kicks ass. :)
Hey, I never seen that "Spring is coming" strip yet.

You can't beat the classics: Prince Valiant, Little Nemo In Slumberland, Terry And The Pirates, Tarzan, Popeye. Of course, those were also the glory days of the newspaper comic strip, before the bastards started shrinking the pages (a trend attacked several times in Berke Breathead's Bloom County —one of the greatest of the modern strips).

Unfotunately, I could never really keep up with Prince Valiant. As for the others, I never saw them...

I'm a far-side guy. Surreal and funny if you get them and also funny when other people don't.

I never read Calvin and Hobbes. It falls outside my sphere of comic influence.

While I learned to read on Peanuts, and work in a world wheer everyone has a farside cartoon on their door (I still laugh at the cattle tube farm), Dilbert has Bob the Dinosaur who gives wedgies to people who deserve it.

Dilbert,, therefore, wins.

Dilbert, if only for proving that you don't necessarily have to draw extremely well to have a successful comic strip. :P
Don't hate; appreciate!

YES! Prince Valiant rocks.

As for the page shrinkage, it is damn annoying, and Bill Waterson of Calvin & Hobbes fame also attacked that.

Bill Watterson also attacked the tyranny of required panel size... unfortunately, there haven't been many who have taken advantage of the freedom.

He later learned that freeing himself from those constraints meant for a lot more work.

Fred G., who does the webcomic Megatokyo, also has noted how much longer the "free-form" comics take to draw compared to his earlier panel-based ones.
