Dec. 1, 2003 | LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy was scolded and forced to write "I will never use the word `gay' in school again" after he told a classmate about his lesbian mother, the American Civil Liberties Union alleged Monday.
Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess Nov. 11 at Ernest Gaullet Elementary School when a classmate asked about Marcus' mother and father, the ACLU said in a complaint.
Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl likes another girl," according to the complaint.
A teacher who heard the remark scolded Marcus, telling him "gay" was a "bad word" and sending him to the principal's office. The following week, Marcus had to come to school early and repeatedly write: "I will never use the word `gay' in school again."
A phone message left for Lafayette Parish schools superintendent James Easton was not immediately returned.
The ACLU is demanding the case be removed from Marcus' file and that the school apologize to the boy and his mother, Sharon Huff.
"I was concerned when the assistant principal called and told me my son had said a word so bad that he didn't want to repeat it over the phone," Huff said. "But that was nothing compared to the shock I felt when my little boy came home and told me that his teacher had told him his family is a dirty word."
The last part is the worst.
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.
That is just fucking disgusting. Telling a fucking seven year old that talking about his family is wrong just because it offends some asshat's sensibilities. Then fucking punishing him for it. Fuck this.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

I agree to an extent. People need to be exposed to the harsh realities of life, but it's not necessarilly their fault that they're incapable of dealing with it. so you can't really blame them. It's the babying parents' fault.

So, he got in trouble for calling his mother, who is admitadly gay, gay? Thats rather ridiculous, what did they want him to call her, a carpet munching dyke or something?
Zero Tolerance = Zero Thinking
amazing that some schools still have problems enforcing them huh?
A teenage girl is just a teenage boy who can get laid.

Theres a good quote, it goes something like this, "The most important part of Freedom of Speech is not the freedom for the thought you like but for the thought you don't like."

True, but then again, freedom of speech does not apply to a public school, which is a controlled environment. The question is one of judgement, not freedom of speech.

Well freedom of speech does extend to public schools to some extent. Public school staff is only allowed to crack down on speech if it creates disruption to normal school functions.
Of course, it mentions no such disruption disurption here, so it's just a puritanical bitch throwing around her weight....
Welcome, welcome everyone to my homeland of homophobic, racist, and drunk Louisiana. They're are plenty people in the closest, the locals know them but their relatives essentially hide them from view in various ways. I read this article in the regional paper, I even have a picture of the report. The Advertiser's article The teacher's note said: "He explained to another child that you are gay and what being gay means." Which, is bs because he gay is when a woman loves a woman. She forced the child to write his parents: "Dear Mom: I said a bad word." Gay is used in the higher grades meaning homosexual and stupid at the same time. That basically sums up the views around here.
