In-fact, Sirius, the game you're describing seems to fit very well with Galaxies. Maybe you should play that instead. :)

yeh dude... go play star wars galaxies...

its exactly what you seem to be describing, except its an mmorpg.

its very difficult to become a jedi in that game, most people don't bother.

I'm actually thinking of purchasing Galaxies myself. From what I gather it'll cost a mere £6 a month, but I'm not sure about the spec requirement, off to the LucasArts site I go. :)

unless you have loads of ram theres not much point in getting it, however it runs fine on 56k, if your on the right server

i was in the beta test and the only thing limiting my experience was that i only have 256mb of ram, so my game slowed considerably in the cities.

its a great game, but i played it to death in the beta test, and i lose interest in games very quickly.

Well I think it can be best put that Sirius wanted more(don't blame him entirely...but the way the story was specifically molded...you are meant to become a Jedi) and enjoys multiplayer(a large reason I never got into NWN).

Either way...the game is fun and for this year is better then anything I've played(and including FFX-2...unless it presents some vast change within Chapter 5...it's unlikely to tump KoTOR)

This is a bit akin to wanting to play Ultima without being the avatar, or Baldur's Gate without being whatever the heck one is in Baldur's Gate (baalspawn or something), or Daggerfall without being the friend of the Emperor who is sent on a mission, or Morrowind without beginning as a prisoner or becoming the chosen one or whatever, or deciding not to be a nanoaugmented agent in Deus Ex, etc. It's called "the Plot" and it's pretty much pre-written (no Dungeon Master inside your computer box).

Most computer RPGs aren't free form. You can play Neverwinter Nights with a DM if you want truely freeform, or Icewind Dale or Bard's Tale if you want a nondescript party.

Embracer Of Darkness wrote:Sirius, stop being an ass. Even though Vympel hasn't played the game, he's made very good points.

As someone who has been playing the game since before its release, Sirius, the game is supposed to follow a story. It's not a massive and completely open-ended RPG, in-fact there are twelve slightly flexible storylines in the game based on which class and gender you choose to play, and wether you play dark-side or light-side, but they all go through the same story. It's how the designers wanted it.

The point of the game is to be an interactive cinematic experience, not a free-style RPG.

Knowing how the game ends, I can tell you that you have to become a Jedi (dark or light) to defeat this game. There is a huge twist in the storyline directly involving this.
Duh, the way the game is currently designed does require you to be a Jedi, this is true, but my arqument has always been that the game would be vastly improved if it allowed for a more diverse character development. What is it that you do not understand about that?
Embracer Of Darkness wrote:As for multiplayer, I can't remember the exact reason, but they left it out because it couldn't be done properly.
Odd, NWN is quite similar and allows multiplayer games, might this have something to do with KotOR being a console game? In any case half the attraction of games like BG and NWN for me is in the multiplayer experience, knowing why KotOR lacks multiplayer doesn't change the fact that it does.
Embracer Of Darkness wrote:As for you laughing at Vympel saying there are three classes of Jedi, what is your problem, ass? There are three classes! Guardian, Sentinel, and Consulate. Each with different bonuses and penalties. You even have to pick the colour of your lightsabre accordingly but can customise it later.
Heu retard, how does that change the fact that unlike in Fallout you can't solve most problems without resorting to violence in KotOR?
Embracer Of Darkness wrote:What the hell is all this crap? What don't you understand about how there is a pretty set storyline and you have a pretty set character which must complete the same bunch of goals no matter what class, gender, or alignment you play.

I've tried deviating from the storyline, you know what happens? Nothing. You end up doing something like running around tattooine with nobody saying much at all, bored out of your skull. Sure, you can play the odd swoop-race, but that gets old very fast.
That is presicely the fucking problem. I'd like a role-playing game, even a computer one, to allow for more freedom of choice then KotOR does. Lack of choices is presicely what I have been complaining about, I'd like to know how you think you've refuted my complaint by simply conforming what I've said?
Embracer Of Darkness wrote:You seem to have a problem with pretty much the entire point of the game. Obviously the game is not for you, play something else.
How fucking stupid are you? Newflash for the dullwitted, the arqument with Vympel started when I said that I WOULD NOT PLAY KOTOR!!! (The something else is Call of Duty BTW)

Having to buy a full priced game first and then forking 10-15€ a month after the first "free" one to play the game is too rich for my liking.

The fact that the character development has to be limited slightly to make way for the god-damned plot to work. If you want alot of character development then I suggest you play Galaxies.
Sir Sirius wrote:Odd, NWN is quite similar and allows multiplayer games, might this have something to do with KotOR being a console game? I don't think the developers wanted a multiplayer mode. As I have said, it is supposed to be a cinematic experience.
Sir Sirius wrote:Heu retard, how does that change the fact that unlike in Fallout you can't solve most problems without resorting to violence in KotOR?
What does that have to do with anything? Every time Vympel said there were three Jedi classes you did a laughing emoticon. I simply pointed out that there are indeed three classes and that you had absolutely no reason to find it so funny.

When I'm trying to refute something, I'll say so. I was simply pointing out that the storyline must be limited in order to actually progress, ass. If you want so much choice, go fucking play Galaxies!
Sir Sirius wrote:How fucking stupid are you? Newflash for the dullwitted, the arqument with Vympel started when I said that I WOULD NOT PLAY KOTOR!!! (The something else is Call of Duty BTW)
So, again, I am going to tell you that KotOR is obviously not for you. So what's the point in bitching about it so much?

Right, I've just bought this game and gotta say it's pretty cool, from what I've seen thus far (not much). Has anyone else played this game, and can they share their experiences? Mine's the Xbox version; the PC version was nowhere to be seen, and I doubt my computer can handle it.

It's good on the PC, even on a 733 it works okay, just some lag when there's lots of stuff on screen, but since it's an RPG, it doesn't really affect it that much.

Two real criticisms. The maps are annoying since you can't seem them laid out all together, only by area. Walking around so damn far sucks too, they should have used the points on the maps to transport you to the location.

Oh, and does anybody know, when you're onboard the Hawk and your crew can make stuff like grenades and stims, what is the source material they are using for that? The parts you randomly find?

Who knows ;)

They only make stims spikes and grenades up to a certain amunt.

Then you have to use some of the stuff to get more.

I just beat KOTOR with a light-side main force approach. This game fucking owns. The main plot twist totally blindsided me :D

I've also beat the game using a light side male scout, and like yourself, the plot twist blew me away. :)

I played the game for a few hours only, but I like it very much :)
However, there are some points which could be improved:
- Mechanics - Basing a computer game on a system (D20) designed for table-dice rolling is NOT the best idea. As seen in Fallout. It seems however to work good in Kotor, but then again I need to play the game a bit more.
- I would prefer an X-Y freelook mode, instead of only being able to look left or right.
- They could add some more effort and record player's voice. Didn't do Deus Ex any harm, I got a feeling that this guy is mute. Sure, they'd have to do male and female, but I don't think that's a big deal.

There is no source. Each character that can make low level items for you will only produce an item if you have less than 11 in your inventory.

The most important thing I learned playing KOTOR is that I suck at Paazak.

I wasn't surprised at the twist. I figured it out when Saul whispered something to Carth. The whole "You mean they didn't tell you?" from both Saul and Malak told me what was coming. For many interactions after that I really wanted to go dark (I was playing a light side scout) - but I wussed out and stayed on the path of goodness and light. Sadly, I had to kill Bastila because I didn't have enough skill in Persuade or Empathy to move her from her position.

I found the game enjoyable and accomplished most of the quests. I missed a couple of the companion character's side quests, but I'll try and pick them up from an earlier saved game just to see how they play out. The only critique I have is that even with the choices they give you, it's still not variable enough for me. But I don't consider it enough of a critique to devalue the game, really.

KOTOR rocks

Post by Marcao »

The little twist did catch me more or less by surprise, which was a nice touch about it. I beat the game in five days or so, and found it to be very enjoyable. The only complaints I have are as follows.

S
P
O
I
L
E
R
S

1. The Sith apprentices/Dark Jedi/Jedi Masters tended to be pretty damned easy. I am not sure if this was because I did not change the difficulty level at all, and will certainly do increase the difficulty in my future games. Nonetheless, I met Sith and it was like a hot knife through butter. I was a light-sider and the combination of knight or master speed with valor is brutal.

2. The dark-side only items are poor in comparison to the light-side only.

3. The pacing of the game seems a bit off. When I finished the first world, I was a level 8. That means that all I had was 12 more levels to go before I hit the 20th level cap. I was well before the end of the game when I hit level 20.

KOTOR is these minor flaws aside a rock-solid game and I plan on playing it a few more times and see what happens. I don't have the heart to be a dark-sider though. I did suffer through some minor instability issues, but I think they will be dealt with by the time they patch the game.

SPOILER ISH

Maybe it was the order I used, but I didn't hit twenty until I was half way through the final world (before the Star Forge). I should add, that I didn't try and do everything I could to maximize xp - but I felt I accomplished quite a bit. There were maybe 2-4 in-line quests I missed or didn't finish and I know I didn't do the companion side quests for Canderous, Bastila or Jahira. (Was there one for Jolee?)

There is a side quest for each though Jolee's is usually disguied as something you almost do anyway on Manaan.

My only bit is that after the first time...the final boss proved very little challenge(and when you figure out how to get rid of his healing...it's much much easier...almost too easy...usually I let him have it)

Malak would be have been quite hard if I hadn't possessed the hit points to soak up his attacks. He has quite good bonuses on his attack and damage rolls, and he usually attacks twice a round. Since I went Soldier-Guardian I had a load of hitpoints and I just tanked him to death.

I think I'm going to play some other games for a few weeks to a month, and then come back and play the campaign as a darksider.

He does...I've used them all(yes, 9 times through...actually ten, because I wanted to go uber on the PC...using the new armor and turning my Jedi into Sith killing numero uno)

For the most part he does have excellent Force resistence(with my outlandish Consular + Uber Wisdom only affected him a third of the time) and good AC/Hit...but when you get Flurry, Two Swords, and well Master Speed...he becomes a blood splotch(and this is before I use Valor...)
