As I'm not American, I can't participate but I wish you good luck. The increasing corporate use of unpaid overtime is one of the ways economists can "prove" that productivity has skyrocketed

What the fuck is going on in the capitol!?!?!!!

Someone is *clearly* not thinking correctly. Pay the overtime and get the money moving around out there in peoples hands, not sitting in some corporation's account...

Being a Kiwi, I cannot sign it..If I was a yank, I would. That is outrageous..expecting people to work for free? If your union has a good amount in the kitty, strike. Make sure your placards read

"We dont work for Free"
Via money Europe could become political in five years" "... the current communities should be completed by a Finance Common Market which would lead us to European economic unity. Only then would ... the mutual commitments make it fairly easy to produce the political union which is the goal"

Actually, My union like Police officers and many others in even Privatized Government employ can't strike.

however, despite being a national policy, It doesn't effect me. (I live in a very pro-union state, and OT is still protected under CA law....)

Waitaminnit...so they want to stop paying extra for overtime? So basically, there would be no such thing as overtime?

I can't think of a single reason for them to do that. What the fuck are they smoking?

Jesus fucking CHRIST, put away your hammers and sickles. Bush is not going to take away your overtime. Even if the pinko EPI's worst predictions come true, no more than 8 million of them will be losing overtime. Here are some more articles on the matter:

This is a restructuring, not an abolition. Not to mention these people now caterwauling for workers earning more than $65,000 a year are largely the same who not too long ago were fighting tooth and nail against tax cuts that would benefit them. Fucking hypocrites.

Durran please, don't start with the tax cuts benefiting the middle class again. That is a complete load of bullshit. The bottom 60% income earners of America's taxpayers got only 14.7% of the tax cut. I would suggest that you do not dispute this.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Yeah, but untop of all other taxes, including state and local, the Middle Class is hit the worst, and benefits the most from the corresponding liberated percentage of their income.

And besides, its idiotic anyway, as a graduated income tax is clear unfair to begin with.

Because many of those in the lowest percentile have no federal income tax liability and others pay very little. What percent of nothing would you like returned? 50%? 100%? A handout disguised as a tax cut?

Income earners earning over $65,000 are not in the lowest 60 percent of income earners, anyway. This country would be a lot richer if they were. So they most certainly are benefitting from tax cuts.

It is when a lot of people apparently take the bait and think that the Evil Corporate Monster Bush is going to take away their overtime.

In any case, read the EPF study. This could very well be BS.

Most proffesional level positions are salaried which means no OT. It is the companies way to give everyone a 50 hr workload for 40 hrs of pay. The idea behind salary is that it give the worker and employer flexibility to work odd hours when needed. ie) If you need to go to the dentist, you just go. Where as an hourly employee need permision, will lose the hours etc.

However, in real life the trade off with being salaried is a larger workload.

It isn't as unfair as you think. Consider this: people in the upper class in America have a huge income disparity over the middle and epecially lower classes. The only way those classes can survive is with social programs paid by taxes. Now you can argue that the upper class shouldn't have to pay for programs they don't use, but if they want to continue relying on working class people at low wages (the very building blocks of their financial empires) then they need to support them.

Think of a restaurant for a sec. The reason that the waiters can survive on only a few bucks an hour is because they make a lot on tips. If tipping wasn't customary, then the menu prices would have to increase in order to pay for increased salaries for the waiters.

Wrong, they pay very little in income taxes, however the average payroll taxes for a family of four making $35,000 is $5,355. And I might add that during the BUSH SPONSERED Tax Family Events during the 2000 campaign, it turned out that most lower class families would have gotten greater tax returns under Gore's plan then Bush's.
Income earners earning over $65,000 are not in the lowest 60 percent of income earners, anyway. This country would be a lot richer if they were. So they most certainly are benefitting from tax cuts.
Benefitting yes, but you called us hypocrites for bashing Bush tax cuts that largely benefitted the wealthy. People making > $125,000 recieved the most benefits from the tax cuts (even though they needed it the least) all while Bush cut social programs that hurt the lower class.
