In English, or at least North American English, your lap is the seat formed by your crotch and legs when you sit down. So when you say that you had a religious camp in a place called Lapland, especially with all those stories about Catholic priests, people tend to get a little weirded out.Oberleutnant wrote:Huh?Enigma wrote:Errr....

Lap in Swedish is an other word for Sami, the wierd people in the north that bitch and whine ALL the time.Dalton wrote:In English, or at least North American English, your lap is the seat formed by your crotch and legs when you sit down. Lapland = Where Lap lives.
They must keep on geting huge grants from the goverment so they can countinue having raindeers and stuff.
And our priests and stuff are Protestant, they can marry and stuff. Strange that the Pedo Priest aren't that common here. I have never heard of a Swedish priest being accused of pedofilia.

Lap·land P Pronunciation Key (lplnd, -lnd)
A region of extreme northern Europe including northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland and the Kola Peninsula of northwest Russia. It is largely within the Arctic Circle.
- Dictionary.com
"More than 80% of the population of Finland are members of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church. Between the ages of 14 and 16 most children in Finland go to Lutheran confirmation school where they are taught the central teachings of the church.
Confirmation school usually involves a one-week camp somewhere in the Finnish countryside, although there are numerous variations: sometimes confirmation camp is linked with sports activities such as basketball or hiking in Finnish Lapland. Finnish confirmation camps are also sometimes held in foreign countries, like this one in authentic Biblical surroundings."
Linky
I spent most of my time at the camp before hiking part reading Star Wars comics (one of the participants was a huge fan and brought his collection of comics with him)... But our priest and youth guides were helluva fun and relaxed people. Seriously, on our bus trip to north they showed us movies like Armageddon, Con Air and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Those who were smokers in our group of participants were allowed to smoke and no one bitched about the habit. The priest and youth guides openly talked about things and were just like . . . normal people. They criticized bible and made fun of Creationists.
By the way, the Finnish Lapland is almost devoid of indigenous Sami. There are only few thousand living there and most of the population is comprised of Finns.

C'mon, you know the confusion has more to do with people here being natrually perverted and jumping to the wrong conclusion.
I've heard of Lapland before. I can't say that I know exactly where it is but I think it usually pops up on US tv around this time of year because there are reindeer there.

You're right, that DOES win all. Looks like a Hallmark card picture, that!
I *had* an old picture of me from the early 90's (the long and gangly years), but damned if I can get this place to put up a Villagephotos.com image for some reason, so the hell with it.

There we go. Damn and hell the lot of it. Me, a little over 16 years young. I was thin as hell as a kid but, as does happen, I got bigger. Not much taller though, but who needs that? Oh, and with less hair. Used to love that straight-arrow plant of black hair of mine and now...I have Patrick-Stewart-Head
I'm also much wider at the shoulder, like my father (a shoe in Mr.Clean look-alike in his own right, but he grew up a thick-muscled farmboy-turned-academic). I went from dancing/fencing to straight up 'fitness training' in my late teens, and so now a long while later, most of formerly lean muscle and flexible joints is now just inflexible, basic strength bulk.

Mike, I think you and I would agree, if we ever met: 12 years makes a shitload of difference when you're 20ish and still rather think you're going to look and feel good forever.
