Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:6. Tell me with a straight face that cats dont smell. I dare you. Not only do they smell as a species in general, they are covered in glands for making smells and the male of the species makes a point of being as smelly as he can and marking his territory with it. As for cat trays stinking to high heaven, that once again is real-world observation of everyone I know who owns a cat. I worked as a telephone engineer for 6 years and I can walk in to a strangers house and right away I'll know if they keep cats. They smell.
Cats don't smell. Mine don't smell at all. Here're your problems:

1) Spay and neuter your pets. Gets rid of lots of smells and behavior problems.

2) Let your cats outside. They will shit and piss outside, not in. They're not the brightest things in the world, but believe it or not, they don't like living in their own filth any more than you do. They'll tell you when they want to go out, and they'll bury their damned business, too, instead of just leaving it on the lawn.

Also, your thing about cats biting or scratching shouldn't be a problem, either. Cats, like dogs, need to be trained over the course of their lives, and unlike dogs, training a cat is as simple as holding it and petting it often. If you cuddle with your cat as it grows, it won't act offensively. Granted, there are some naturally psycho cats, as with every animal, but in general, this will work. And it's simple, too; if you don't want to hold and pet a cat, you shouldn't have one in the first place. None of the cats I've ever had have ever bitten or scratched anyone (with the exception of accidental scratching when they start kneading you because you're petting them).

Not that I think everyone should be a cat person, but it's just that all the problems you've pointed out are problems with the owner, not the cat.
And I love dogs just about as much as cats; I've never seen the reason for the big schism.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

My cats piss on me even when i'm NOT on fire! Waitaminute....seriously though, what could they do? They're little fuzzy things, a shih-tzu or terrier wouldn't do crap to save you either.
2. Dogs do not treat you like a lodger in your own home.
That's because they're needy, whiny, clingy animals, that aren't intelligent enough to realise how things work.
3. Dogs are reknowned for being loyal to their owners
Yeah, but in my experience of owning both all my life, it really is dependent on the cat/dog.
4. Dogs will defend you from attack, sometimes to the death
True. Sometimes, not often but sometimes, cats will too.
5. Dogs do not act like they're smarter than you, indeed they're dead easy to kid around with should you wish. I like that in a companion. They can however be taught quite complex commands, which is a real plus. Look at sheepdogs, they're practically remote controlled!
Also true. Dogs annoy me because they're like clingy girlfriends, most aggrevating. I prefer the way cats are, you can have fun together and a good friendship, but they don't bug you about it all the time. Plus they walk themselves!
6. Dogs dont smell anywhere near as bad as cats do
I disagree with this, my cats smell far better than my dogs, and they don't need baths every few weeks. Our cats are also toilet trained and only crap outside. The dogs will crap in a room if they think they can get away with it, i swear.
7. Cats have more faces than the town clock, you never know if they're going to bite you, piss on you or try to make love to you. Dogs are straight ahead guys, dead easy to read their moods.
Heh, this can be true. You know if a dog is baring it's teeth at you cos you're near it when it's eating, it's gonna bite you. Cats do have "mad half hours" in which they're liable to do anything. They can be most entertaining when they're like that.
8. Dogs come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes to suit all tastes and pockets. How handy!
So do cats, we've just not domesticated the big types yet, but we will, i hope :D.

I think what it comes down to is this:

Cats are for people who want a pet but don't have the time for one such as a dog. Cats are nice and cute, easily the equal of dogs, but are independant enough to exercise themselves and can even feed themselves if you forget. When a man gets a dog, the dog becomes dependant on the man. When a man gets a cat, they form a sort of symbiotic relationship. The man gets a nice cute pet that can releave stress and the cat gets a nice home and regular feeding, neither needs the other but they both get benefits.

Also cat bites generaly aren't as dangerous as dog bites.

Sounds like a fair appraisal of the situation there, well done that man. I love playing with my friends cats, and his big ginger tom loves me beyond all other humans for no reason other than the fact that I will sit for hours scratching vigorously behind his right ear.

I have noticed however that it tends to be cat lovers who are the purveyors of the cats/dogs schism, whilst people with dogs tend not to care about it and many I know also own a cat. It would appear cat lovers are the fanatics, and people with time for dogs tend to have time for all other household pets as well. Again I'm only going with personal experience here, at least 3 of my good friends have cats and passionately hate dogs as big yappy things that shit in the street. These same people have to get up and throw their own pets shit out several times a day because it stinks the house out in seconds, but that doesn't seem to register with them. Love is blind I suppose.

Finally uploaded some pics of my cats:

From top to bottom:
1- Biff (Black/White) and Max (Grey/White) as a kitten
2- Biff and Max (Now fully grown). Note that Max is not bigger than Biff it just looks that way
3- Cookie (Beige) and Jake (Silver Tabby) as kittens. Apparently they're brothers.
4- Me with Max, Jake and Cookie. Cookie is big boned AND fat while Jake is just fat. Also just recently Cookie has the end of his tail amputated, he came home with the bone exposed and we think someone trapped it in a door somewhere.
