Clearly if we'd had BMD in 2001, we would have been able to stop the terrorists when they launched a series of slow-moving, predictable ballistic missiles into major American landmarks...

Does it spend money that could be more profitably spent elsewhere? Yes, there are any number of things that it could be better employed in.Vympel wrote:IMO, a waste of time and money- billions of dollars and creative energy better spent elsewhere.
Is it a waste? No, given states like North Korea and Iran it's something we might well need down the road. As nukes and long range ballistic missles spread to progressively more unstable countries the chances that some psycho deciding to take world down with him grow. It's for circumstances like that we'd need it and which it's able enough.
But how plausible is .... this scenario anyway? I gather its even more unlikely than the orginal scenario.Stormbringer wrote:Does it spend money that could be more profitably spent elsewhere? There's tons of things that money could be better used on. Better pay for intelligence anaylsts and Arabic translators, creating and supporting Western friendly media and religious cliques, the usual cloak and dagger stuff than this "shield" that's postulated use is being guarded against by the two other twin shields of US military power and non-profilteration.
Sure, ABM will ensure America is relatively secure against enemy ballistic missiles, but fuck! Isn't there more relevent threats, that desperately need more resources and uses technology that isn't controversial?

Re: Missile Defense - Fuck in the arse or good defense strat
The US couldn't do so regardless as to weather or not it wanted to, the interceptors wouldn't have the reach or anything like the cross range capability needed for the job. In ordered to defend Australia there would need to be interceptor missiles based there, which in turn would be useless for protecting the US. But anyway I don't think Australia is actually spending a dime on the US program, the US is just asking if it can use its existing satellite communications equipment for somthing else.weemadando wrote:
Would the US use any interceptors to help us? Or would all of them go to minimising damage over there?
I only ask, because, well - it seems like a fuck in the arse if we put time and effort into working with the US to build this thing and we never get any assistance from it?

Don't we have lasers now? Has no one ever played Missle Command? We should send up satillites with lasers and use them to blow up missiles!

Really we should have all passengers armed. Make it a mandatory requirement. You think you'd have any hijackings if they knew everyone was armed? Didn't think so.Hamel wrote:SOCOM ain't gonna do shit since some nut can hijack a plane with cardboard cutters at any time. Course, to Iceberg, a ICBM is worthless because you can't selectively
eliminate someone with it. There's a reason we have large conventional
forces, to allow us to have a choice between "Do Nothing" and "Nuke them
into glowing ash piles". Same thing with NMD, it gives us an option to
destroy an incoming ICBM, other than "do Nothing", and "Execute full SIOP
warplan and nuke the bastards into glowing dust in return."

I doubt he's enough of a raving loony to think that Los Angeles is a fair trade for us turning South Korea into an island free of charge (Godzilla awakening also free of charge). And Bush was pushing NMD before he knew that KJI was developing nuclear missiles, while he was busy running Operation Ignore on the antiterrorism plan handed to him by the outgoing Clinton Administration.MKSheppard wrote:You conviently forget that Mr Kim Dong Small is developing ever longIceberg wrote: The point of my statement flies over Shep's head and makes a nice whooshing noise.

And australia buying into the US NMD program to
counter the South East Asian region's nuclear arms
buildup in the Indo-Pakistan region would be cheaper
and more politically acceptable to aussie pols than setting
up an Aussie Hanford and cranking out A-Bombs enmasse.

2) Ever hear of a little thing called MAD? Well in this case, it isn't even MAD. It's simply AD, Assured Destruction. They may be Totalitarian, but that just means that they want to hang onto their power more then ever, not throw it away by commiting suicide. Jesus Shep, these people are dictators, not religious fundementalists.
On a related note; I was slightly perturbed by the hyper-positive, best-case-scenario article on the Airborne Laser project in Combat Aircraft, where a AL-1 shoots down a North Korean IRBM - and the warhead survives the explosion, drops to earth, detonates and wipes out a section of the Demilitarized Zone.
Er, okay.
Er, okay.
