J.R.R. Tolkien and Led Zeppelin

Post by Zoltan »

Led Zeppelin has several songs that connect to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit (the trilogy's prelude).

The songs are:

Misty Mountain Hop (Zeppelin IV or Zoso)
Ramble On (Zeppelin II)
Battle of Evermore (Zeppelin IV or Zoso)
Over the Hills and Far Away (Houses of the Holy)
Stairway to Heaven (Zeppelin IV or Zoso)

Which one has the best Middle Earth feeling or message?
Celebrate we will
Because life is short but sweet for certain
We're climbing two by two
To be sure these days continue
These things we cannot change

Stairway to Heaven.

"This is a song of hope."

And a new day will dawn,
for those who stand long,
and the forests will echo with laughter...

Stairway To Heaven.

"There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
and my spirit is crying for leaving."
"Oh no, oh yeah, tell me how can it be so fair
That we dying younger hiding from the police man over there
Just for breathing in the air they wanna leave me in the chair
Electric shocking body rocking beat streeting me to death"

The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall, the ring wraiths ride in black, Ride on.

Battle of Evermore.

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.
How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air.
T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one
crept up and slipped away with her, her, her....yeah.

Ramble On
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.

"Ramble On" has the best references.

But for me, "Battle of Evermore" evokes the most feeling. It also ties with "Thank You" and the live version of "No Quarter" as my favourite Led Zeppelin songs.

IIRC, Page and Plant have denied that "Stairway to Heaven" has any connections to Tolkien, and having listened to it for a number of years, I agree with them. While musically, it might set your mind in Middle-earth, lyrically it does not.

Yes, actually, I think they did. I put it on the thread beacuse people tended to think so. Anyway, I think Ramble On has the most connection. Musically and Lyrically.

After listening more closely to "Battle of Evermore" and looking at the lyrics I'd have to agree with you.
