Recommend a decent UK ISP (formally Rant on AOL)

Post by Dorsk 81 »

So it's around 6 pm and I wake up (didn't go to work...dont ask) and I turn on my comp and try to connect. AOL tells me my password is invalid (I use AOL to connect, nothing more). "That's strange" I think to myself so I enter my password and it says it's still wrong, so I try again, and again and give up and go to ring AOL.
I get through and this guy who sounded like a complete moron answered the call, he tells me I need to ring head office or something "That's strange" I think again, so I wait till the person who pays the bill gets home incase they want credit card details or something. I get through to the person I'm meant to ring and I'm told that my account has been disabled, I ask why and she says she can't give out that information and then she gives me another number to ring and at this point I'm thinking "This is very strange".
I get through to this number and ask why my accounts been disabled. I'm told it's because of a conversation I had in AOL chat. "That's very fucking strange" I think because I never use AOL chat. Then I'm told that I've been sending offensive emails to people and such. I tell the guy I haven't and ask when this is meant to have happen, he gives me a list of times between saturday morning and sunday morning and I was at work or asleep then. At this point I realise some fuck has cracked my account which has now really fucked me off. [/fucking pissed of rant]

No offense or anything but thats what you get for using the worst ISP on the planet,I'd rather use MSN and a webtv then AOL.

Sorry man,Thats just an opinion.

Get some cheapo local dial up company and you can get just as good service, no crappy shell browser and all for about 1/3 the price.

Yea, I know, I just can't think of who else to use, I've been pretty much blacklisted by BT.
Suggestions for a new ISP are welcome!

Earthlink has that download accelerator thing. If they have a server close enough so it's not long distance you're in the gold.

As in British Telecom? You UK? Go for Freeserve, half the price of BT dial-up and you actually get unlimited time instead of BTs restricted hours per month.

Good point! I completely forgot about freeserve!

That's pretty fucked up. Could do what I do, I always kept a few screen names running for this reason. Though I have a good deal of paranoia in me.

I'm not that paranoid, but I'm sensible, never give my password out, etc, but this AOL guy was there saying the most common ways he could have gotten my password and he was talking to me like I was fucking 5!!
After I read phongns idea, I rang AOL again and got the same guy and said you could trace the call to find out who it was, and see that it wsn't my home number, but he just shrugged it off and said they can't do things like that! WTF!?

Pricks.

Make sure your anti virus is updated and run a full system scan for one. My knowldge doesn't really go much past that.

Thank you Captain Obvious.

Anyone think of anything I could use for a thorough search?

Spybot Search and Destroy works quite well and it is free. Should be able to take care of any pesky shit that has infested itself on your computer. Between that, your Anti-virus and a good hardware firewall you should be safe from any malicious activity.

TDS-3 is an anti trojan application much like the more common anti virus applications.

D/L Update scan your system and post the resoults here or pm them to me.

Strangely enough I downloaded Spybot S&D yesterday or the day before and I went to set it up and it told me it had been corrupted. :?

Well, first it's very polite, it wished me a good afternoon and told me to take a lunch break!
Then it said no trojan mutexes found....which is a good thing I assume, lol.
Anything else?

Done and done, cleaned out a crap load of junk with Spybot. *Is ashamed of himself*

Ok, so now seeing as I've managed to hijack (I got permission!) my mums credit card and am about to cancel AOL after this inccident, can someone recommend a good ISP I can use in the UK (apart from BT)?

Since you can sign onto AOL, or AIM anywhere that has an internet connection that won't get you very far. All he has to do is say that he was not signed on during that time and someone obviously got his password. If policy is the same they will send him a couple emails, recommend that he run a virus scan, and give him a temp. password.

AOL's TOS specifically states that whatever happens on your account is your responsibility. I hate to say it but one of the users of his AOL account fucked up and did something stupid, they either gave out their password or downloaded a virus.

I use to work in CAT, or password appeals, or whatever they are calling the department now that he had to call to get his password reset.
