61,000 Baghdad residents 'executed'

Post by theski »

SADDAM Hussein's government may have executed 61,000 Baghdad residents, a number significantly higher than previously believed, according to a survey obtained today by The Associated Press.
The US-led occupation authority in Iraq has said that at least 300,000 people are buried in mass graves in Iraq. Human rights officials put the number closer to 500,000, and some Iraqi political parties estimate more than 1 million were executed

Gosh he was such a great guy... I think we should put him back in power.... :)

According to a survey? What, did they interview the corpses to see if they were executed by Saddam or not?

No, they probably asked living people if there families had had anyone disappear when Saddam was in power and what the circumstances of such disappearances where.

Bah, he is olny a small fish in the league of dictators killing thier own people. There are the one, higher in the league.
Examples:

-The King of Paraguay managed to get 90% of his people killed in a war he led aganst Uruguay, Brasil and Argentinia.
-Josef Stalin managed to kill much more people in the USSR with his regime than WW II did.
-In the span of some years, the Red Khmer did it to kill over a million people in Kamboscha (correct spelled?)

So you see, Saddam is only a small fish.

The highest estimate I've ever seen for the Paraguayan death toll in The War of The Triple Alliance was 80% of the population dead, but it seems that that is in fact a considerable exaggeration and no more then half where killed. In any case, the nations total population was only about 1.3 million at the start.

He was a lunatic dictator who got (with some reason) afraid of Brazil's intentions after Brazil invaded Uruguay. So, he did the logical thing: Invade Brazil first, the absolutely biggest and richest S. American country, that had a population ten times as large as Paraguay and a treaty of mutual defense with Argentina.

..

OK, the man's logic was somewhat flawed.

I believe it's the Khmer Rouge, in Cambodia. Nearly 25% of the country's population killed off...

So we should what, find him and put him in detention saturday morning? This is evidence enough why the fucker had to be dealt with. though granted the WMD claims are more than likely bullshit and if the US really wanted him out they shouldve done it back in '91 :x

Nice to see how you failed to mention a certain German mass murderer in your list...

He considered having the population of his capital commit mass suicide after having them empty the city…. Had the national treasure thrown off a cliff into the jungle and then all witness tossed in after it and his first act after forcing the clergy to make him a Bishop (those who refused where executed) was to have his mother flogged. The guy was beyond a mere lunatic. His wife wasn’t much better, he met her in Ireland as I recall, when she wasn’t egging him on in his insanity she was busy forming regiments of female “Amazon warriors” armed with wooden spears to throw into the nations hopeless battles.

Talk of this dictator make my head spin. It is amazing that Paraguy still exists today.

You should see the before and after maps of his reign.

Indeed, at the end of the war it was reduced to a fraction of its former size, which was only about half as large as it of its size today (Most of the western part of the country was captured in a war with Bolivia in the 30's, which is another funny story since it was fought over nonexistent oil fields)

Lets see, some other insanity from Senior Lopez, in one battle he was wounded by a shell from a Brazilian ironclad. He claimed it had been aimed at him personally and ordered his naval commander to destroy the Brazilian fleet, using a few rafts. The naval commander however was too old for the task and turned it over to an English engineer named Watts. What's truly insane though is Watt's led a boarding party of Paraguayan infantry succeeded in seizing the decks of several Brazilian ships. Though sailors coming up from below decks soon threw them off.

And I made a mistake on the Bishop bit; he actually had himself made a Saint.

In case anyone is wondering, Lopez was killed at the end of the war while attempting to flee into the Amazon. His wife went on to remarry the Brazilin general who led the expedition that killed him and captured her IIRC.

Not that I'm aware of, but it wouldn't surprise me. Aside from the whole slaughter thing he kept his arm inside his jacket so as to mimic Napoleon and if he didn't attend an official party then a large painting of him had to be placed on the throne, to which all guests had to bow as if he where there.
