Yes, but Gil back then was barely used as a character. Now he does the same stuff as Gil but is more pathetic.

yeah they've taken the whole Gill thing a bit too far--"look at how pathetic i am!". He was good as an occassional character but not as a frequent one. Troy McClure seemed much funnier, and he didnt have a single running gag (plus, with Hartman we also got Lionel Hutz, who was even funnier than McClure!).

Oh man, he played Hutz too? Nutz was like the best secondary Simpsons character ever, next to maybe the comicbook guy
