Hmmm... so hard to narrow it down!

"Pat-a-pan" aka "Willie bring your Fife"

"Ding-Dong, Merry are the Bells"... mainly because its' also the song to one of my favorite SCA dances 'Officials Bransle' (aka 'Fling-a-Wench')

"O Holy Night" ... It's just one of those beautiful songs, especially a solo tenor singing.

"I Wonder as I Wander" .. one of my Dad's favorites.

As for the question, probably Carol of the Bells.

The Apollo 13 End credits theme. Don't know quite why, but it's one of the most hauntingly festive songs I've heard in ages. :?

2000 Miles by The Pretenders, the acoustic "Isle of View" version of course. It's the Christmas song that's a Christmas song but not a Christmas song.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen The Barenaked Ladies & Sarah McLachlan version. Fun, lighthearted, and kicks ass

The First Noel by the Crashtest Dummies. Yup, I support my Canadian musicians, this version is just so cool.

This thread made me remember the carol I sang in my high school choir, "The Wassail Song." It's a pretty good English song.

Some of my favorites.

Like Guns N Roses with Axel Rose spittin'
Ozzie's black eyes and the bats that he's bitten
Big Marshall stacks and a broken E-string
These are a few of my favorite things

Penthouse apartments and twelve in a hot tub
Drinking Jack Daniels while getting a backrub
Little gold chains pinned to brass nipple rings
These are a few of my favorite things

We like bar fights
We like nose rings
We like eating snails
We always indulge in our favorite things
No wonder our skin's so pale

Girls in black leather with tight little tushes
Tattoos on big bosoms of prickly rose bushes
Silver stretch limos that come when I ring
These are a few of my favorite things

We like bar fights
We like nose rings

I Am Santa Claus

(Parody of Iron Man by Black Sabbath)

I am Santa Claus!
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!

Flying through the snow
Can you hear him "Ho, ho, ho?"
He's so full of cheer
Only has to work one day a year

Children in their beds
Visions of sugar plums fill their heads
So many kids out there
Santa must be a billionaire

Red suit, boots of black
Big sack of toys hangin' off his back
How much does he weigh?
How do the reindeer pull his sleigh?

Nobody sees him
As he travels the world
Leaving his presents
For the good boys and girls

Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!

Sees every move you make
Better be good, for goodness' sake
Leave him cookies and beer
He'll be back to your house first next year

I am Santa Claus
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.

OH! Forgot this one:

Happy Christmas (War Is Over)/John Lennon

(Happy Christmas, Yoko. Happy Christmas, John.)

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one's just begun

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong

And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

War is over
If you want it
War is over
Now

(Happy Christmas)

Is this something you came up with alone, or is it from somewhere else? I've never heard this before...
Zaia wrote:If that doesn't count, then I think my favourite carol would have to be..I don't know. "Silent Night," maybe? I honestly don't mind the godifulness of the songs if they're pretty. I'm such a music whore.

OH! And "Ave Maria," if that counts.
Ave Maria...It's familiar, but can't remember hearing it...

Anyhow, O Holy Night and Silent Night for me. I've only ever heard Carol of the Bells in an instrumental version, which sounds good to me. I've heard of the TSO version out there but never heard it, and have yet to hear a choir version (or, to be more proper, a capella :) ). I do have a cool instrumental version from a CD called "Enchanted Christmas" of CotB, that's like a harp playing it with some backup.

Set to the tune of Greensleeves.

What Child is This?

What child is this, who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap, is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring him lord,
The Babe, the Son of Mary

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come peasant, king, to own Him,
The King of kings, salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise the song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby:
Joy, joy, for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary

What child is this, who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap, is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

Raise, raise the song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby:
Joy, joy, for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary

As for the Ave Maria, you'd be a hell of a lot more likely to recognize the melody than the words, but here they are, just in case:

Ave Maria, gratia plena
Dominus tecum benedicta tu in mulieribus
Et benedictus fructus ventris tuis Jesus
Sancta Maria, Sancta Maria, Maria
Ora pro nobis
Nobis peccatoribus
Nunc et in hora, in hora mortis nostrae
Amen. Amen.

This song almost always makes me cry.

Old City Bar/Trans-Siberian Orchestra

In an old city bar
That is never too far
From the places that gather
The dreams that have been

In the safety of night
With its old neon light
It beckons to strangers
And they always come in

And the snow it was falling
The neon was calling
The music was low
And the night
Christmas Eve

And here was the danger
That even with strangers
Inside of this night
It's easier to believe

Then the door opened wide
And a child came inside
That no one in the bar
Had seen there before

And he asked did we know
That outside in the snow
That someone was lost
Standing outside our door

Then the bartender gazed
Through the smoke and the haze

Through the window and ice
To a corner streetlight

Where standing alone
By a broken pay phone
Was a girl the child said
Could no longer get home

And the snow it was falling
The neon was calling
The bartender turned
And said , not that I care
But how would you know this?
The child said I've noticed
If one could be home
They'd be all ready there

Then the bartender came out from behind the bar
And in all of his life he was never that far
And he did something else that he thought no one saw
When he took all the cash from the register draw

Then he followed the child to the girl cross the street
And we watched from the bar as they started to speak
Then he called for a cab and he said, "J.F.K."
Put the girl in the cab and the cab drove away
And we saw in his hand
That the cash was all gone
From the light that she had
Wished upon

If you want to arrange it
This world you can change it
If we could somehow make this
Christmas thing last

By helping a neighbor
Or even a stranger

And to know who needs help
You need only just ask

Then he looked for the child
But the child wasn't there
Just the wind and the snow
Waltzing dreams through the air

So he walked back inside
Somehow different I think
For the rest of the night
No one paid for a drink

And the cynics will say
That some neighborhood kid
Wandered in on some bums
In the world where they hid

But they weren't there
So they couldn't see
By an old neon star
On that, night, Christmas Eve

When the snow it was falling
The neon was calling
And in case you should wonder
In case you should care

Why we're on our own
Never went home
On that night of all nights
We were already there

Then all at once inside that night
He saw it all so clear
The answer that he sought so long
Had always been so near

It's every gift that someone gives
Expecting nothing back
It's every kindness that we do
Each simple little act

I have a rock version of "You're a mean one Mr. Grinch" that's all instrumental. whoever is playing guitar in it is pretty good.

Of course I think that if you;re looking for good tunes to play during the Feast of Alvis or whatever floats yer winter boat you should play THE AQUABATS!!!!!

Here's Pizza Day
The Aquabats Are Seriously The best band In the World wrote:Well I remember my first day at public school
I was very scared of getting pummeled
And sure enough I did at first recess
I got pegged in the head by a big red ball
It stung and my head hung
Back to class with a bloody nose
And soon it was lunchtime

Mom said I should ask about how poor kids can get fed
So I got a book of tickets and a schedule and it read:
Monday - Hot Dog, Tuesday - Taco
Wednesday - Hamburgers and Chocolate Milk
Thursday - Sloppy Joes and burritos in a bag
Friday was Pizza Day, the best day of the week
All the kids would line up super early just to eat

Monday - Hot Dog, Tuesday - Taco
Wednesday - Hamburgers and Chocolate Milk
Thursday - Sloppy Joes and burritos in a bag
Friday was Pizza Day, the best day of the week
It always came with salad and a side of cold green beans

Hooray for Pizza Day
Hooray for Pizza Day
I miss Pizza Day
The best day of the week

Well, I remember my first day in Jr. High
I had hairspray in my hair
And my pants were way too tight
And all the breakers and new wavers
And the rockers and the preps
Would all be in their places
On the front lawn or the steps
I hung out with some punker kids
Who used to make me laugh
I got thrown in the dumpster
By some rich kids near the caf?

As time went on we figured out
It was totally uncool
To eat the welfare lunch
Provided by the school
So in poser-punker fashion
We just mooched off all the kids
And lived off eating candy bars
And bags of nacho chips

Monday - Hot Dog, Tuesday - Taco
Wednesday - Hamburgers and Chocolate Milk
Thursday - Sloppy Joes and burritos in a bag
Friday was Pizza Day, the best day of the week
It always came with salad and a side of cold green beans

Hooray for Pizza Day
Hooray for Pizza Day
I miss Pizza Day
The best day of the week

Well now I'm out of school
And I don't have a job
(You're a slob!)
I just sit around all sweaty and lethargic
And I'm just thinking 'bout where it all went wrong
Why I can't concentrate
On anything but reruns
I wish I had some more stability
I wish I had somebody making lunch for me
I guess I miss the seventh grades in life
The thought of Pizza Day
I thought it was stupid then
But I wish I had it now
I miss my

All Hail the Aquabats, Glory to the Bat Commander, and the song PLAYDOUGH
Aquabats wrote:Playdough

When I was a boy I used to live in corduroy
OP shirts and slip-on Vans.
My life was so simple
I had not one pimple,
My everyday was made up of these plans:
To ride my bike to Thrifty's,
Run past the balls and ice cream and
find the Star Wars figurines.
Thinking of my action men,
Kung-Fu grip and all,
What happened to them all?

[Chorus]

Running through my old life
Looking for my lost toys
Where has all my fun gone?
Now that we're all older
Before we grow much colder
Let's all look forward to the new dawn
An anthem for all lost toys
Now that we're all big boys
We'll stand together and sing this song
We'll sing this song
It's not too long
So everybody sing along

When I was a little man
Playdough came in a little can
I was Star Wars' biggest fan
Now I'm stuck without a plan
GI Joe was an action man
Shaggy drove the mystery van
Devo was my favorite band
Take me back to my happy land

Now my brothers and sisters
I don't mean to make a scene
But I lost my action figures
and it makes me want to scream
Greedo, Chewbacca, Luke, R2, and Han,
3PO, Yoda, Bobafett, Obi Wan
Green Machine, Suckerman
Silly Putty, Lincoln Logs
Sitting in my Underoos
Reading christmas catalogs
What happened to my action men and all?
What happened to it all?

Running through my old life
Looking for my lost toys
Where has all my fun gone?
Now that we're all older
Before we grow much colder
Let's all look forward to the new dawn
An anthem for all lost toys
Now that we're all big boys
We'll stand together and sing this song
We'll sing this song
It's not too long
So everybody sing along

When I was a little man
Playdough came in a little can
I was Star Wars' biggest fan
Now I'm stuck without a plan
GI Joe was an action man
Shaggy drove the mystery van
Devo was my favorite band
Take me back to my happy land

Take me back to my happy land
Take me back to my happy land
Take me back to my happy land
Take me back to my happy land

Generally living in a small rural town I was forcibly conscripted into winter performances and further conscripted by the church I was made to attend by my folks. So most Chirstmas songs just bring up bad memories. Plus they're so dour, i'd rather not be depressed thanks.
"If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little."
-George Carlin (1937-2008)

"Have some of you Americans actually seen Football? Of course there are 0-0 draws but that doesn't make them any less exciting."
-Dr Roberts, with quite possibly the dumbest thing ever said in 10 years of SDNet.
