Pulling all-nighters

Post by Joe »

All right, I think that I'm going to have to pull my first all-nighter ever tonight to study for a final at 7AM tomorrow morning. Advice on how to stay awake/alert?

Keep yourself busy, keep your mind active. You stop for maybe 10 minutes and you'll be done for.

Porn is bad, porn gets you relaxed...relaxed when pulling an all-nighter equals bad.

Wait...I take that back...porn is good...very good.

I just did. and I got through by spacing out my studying with SoF2. Unfortunately, I decided to take a hour long nap before my test at 8:00 and my alarm didn't go off. I got there 30 minutes late, but I was still one of the first people out.

Porn's out of the question, given that I will be studying in the student learning center.

Do a really quick one tomorrow morning.

I tried one all nighter, once. I ODed on pro plus. That was not fun.

1. Drink cold water...you can OD on Caffeine. Won't do much...but it'll lose that whole awake potency.

2. Keep busy.

Don't do it, the lack of sleep makes your brain all sluggish. Study till maybe 2 or 3am then catch a few hours of sleep before the test.

Having done all nighters work and at school I found the key is have something playing in the back ground, at work i would set up my MP3 jukebox and just start spinning tunes, its amazing how that can help keep you awake. Also get up and take a walk around your room or the floor every once in awhile.

I don't drink coffee so thats not an issue but you want to avoid anything monotonous.

I had an Xmas Ball last night and got home at 0200 in the morning yet went to bed despite the exam at noon the day after.

I actually blagged my way through the stuff I couldn't recall, when you've had only a few hours actual sleep one MAP kinase seems like another MAP kinase.

no all nighters

Post by Tsyroc »

When it comes to testing I have always thought it is better to get a decent amount of sleep than it is to try and cram and not sleep at all.
If you've been keeping up with what you are doing in class I would think getting a decent amount of sleep (6 hours or more) would be more beneficial than cramming all night.

I have written papers until late in the morning before they are do but after a certain point you get dimishing returns as your brain gets more tired. Eventually you start making more mistakes, not catching mistakes, and it just ins't worth it.

instead of going all the way with no sleep whatsoever, you could try 'cat-napping'. or getting 20 minute bursts of sleep in here and there throughout the entire period. that way you're not entirely groggy, but you'll be able to stay active through most of the time. a few 12-packs of highly-caffeinated drinks helps as well.

Take it from the Tech student who just had to do one: caffeine in large amounts. It also helps to take a shower just before the exam to stay awake. Dunno if that'll be an option for you if you'll be at your student center, though.

Sigh...since finals suck no matter where you are...good luck.

Do not pull all-nighters. They're not worth it. You'll do poorly on your test, guaranteed.

Your first all-nighter? Ha, I pulled all-nighters all the time when I was in school. It was almost routine, especially in 2nd and 3rd year.

Advice from an all-night study veteran: get a study partner, angry music, and lots of caffeinated drinks.

As a frequent victim of prolonged all nighters I'd suggest the following:
  • Heavy Metal Music - this is a really good way to help keep awake. Loud music helps alot especially since it's something that helps keeps your blood going. Avoid anything repetitive. I'd suggest Rob Zombie, Metallica and Rammestein.
  • Caffiene - This is good, but pace your intake since too much can make you sleepy.
  • Breaks - Take a few little five minute breaks to get up and move around. It helps break the monotony and again, keeps you from getting too sleepy.
  • Don't try to sleep - You won't make it if you're genuinely tired.

I pulled an allnighter once, and decided never to do it again. I was zoned out by the time the test started and even though I did Ok it just wasn't worth it. After that incident I started studying way earlier and skipping my humanities classes since I can pass those in my sleep.
