He was killed on Alderaan. He discovered the Organa family's involvement with the Rebel Alliance, and in the ensuing scuffle he shot himself trying to draw his blaster. The reference is the radio dramatization of A New Hope, so I'm not sure exactly what happened. From the sound of it, Leia was attempting to stop him, and he pulled the trigger before his blaster cleared the holster.

If you want details, he was courting Leia. He was incredibly dense; she showed obvious distaste for him. He realized the Rebel connections after he started describing the Death Star and how his involvement with the project would make him one of the foremost lords of the Empire. She lost her temper and started berating him. She let slip the name, Death Star. Tion had never mentioned it. He was stupid enough to try to arrest them right there in the palace by himself.
Too bad Leia didn't have better luck with the Stormtroopers on the Tantive IV.Rogue 9 wrote:If you want details, he was courting Leia. He was incredibly dense; she showed obvious distaste for him. BRIG the Lord Tion was repeatedly taken advantage of by the Princess Leia, who was more than slightly disgusted with his amourous attentions. On one occasion, she pretended not to know he was listening to her conversation, and manipulated him into allowing her to depart from Ralltiir unhindered (she hinted that she returned his affections but was put off by his demeanour, and that she would know he was a true gentleman if he allowed her to pass unmolested).Rogue 9 wrote:If you want details, he was courting Leia. His judgement was seriously impaired when it came to the Princess, and his accidental death -- which was explained as a hunting accident, a convenient fiction for intrigue and murder for centuries here on Earth -- was a direct result thereof. He felt personally betrayed and attempted to take out his rage on her himself; needless to say, hastily drawing a pistol while emotionally unstable is not a particularly good idea.
