Flag Burning
What are your thoughts? Does your country allow it? If not, then what is the penalty for burning your nations flag?
I know I could probably look on the internet for this information but since I know we have a lot of people from different countries I think this would be a better place to get some answers.
Thank you for your time.

I think you shouldn't get legal problems as long as it's your own flag ( by that I mean that you bought it).
You mean that picture that iirc you postet ages ago with a lot of american flags burning? A lot of people used "right click save image" that dayweemadando wrote: *attempting to resist temptation to post massively offensive picture*

It should be legal.
For the dumbasses who do it in protest often burn themselves while doing it.
It's also one of the legitimate ways to retire a flag that is old and worn. We did it once when I was in Boy Scouts. In that instance the old flag is placed flat and unfurled on a metal screen and then put over a fire. It burns very evenly and respectfully (IMO) that way.
In the US I think the American Legion will take old and worn flags that need to be retired.

I disapprove of flag-burning. However, I disapprove of imprisoning flag-burners even more.
Flag-burning does no objective harm to anyone. It destroys a piece of property which has been bought and paid for by the flag-burner himself, and thus constitutes no material loss to the state, nor to any of its citizens besides the flag-burner himself. Flag-burning does not violate anyone's rights, flag-burning does not discriminate against anyone. There is simply no conceivable reason to make it illegal except for the idiotic notion that unpatriotic behaviour should be persecuted.

Bravo Wicket Pilot! On three counts, the first being your use of the new Decepticon USAF symbol, and the others your two posts on this topic. I'm not sure how anyone could justify imprisoning or even fining someone for destroying their own property. Its the sort of non-violent protest that we should be supporting. Some people don't like it? Some people don't like atheism or anal either, and that ain't illegal.

I knew a guy who, in a class discussion, literally went on for ten minutes trying to reason out why it would be ok to beat someone for burning a flag.
I don't really care, myself. I think its highly disrespectful and obnoxious, but come on- it's a flag. Its not like people are going out and vandalizing the Capitol building.

The only concievable legal argument against it (one that, IIRC, then Deputy Attorney General Kenneth Starr tried to use in front of the Supreme Court) is that buring a flag constitutes incitement to riot, as the act is likely to infuriate observers to the point of violence.
Needless to say, the argument was not convincing to the Court, and it doesn't convince me, either.

I would say that it should be legal in general; however, there are times and places where it could be considered obscene enough for punishment of some kind--from breaking up the protest to a minor fine. One example might be burning a flag outside a vetrens hospital where former POWs are. The same applies to other offensive forms of speach, such as flying a Nazi flag, burning a cross, spreading "hate speach" leaflets, etc.

Why? I dig the Nazi/hate literature thing, but there's no law against being a dick. If I want to stand on public ground and yell into a veterans home that they're all pussies etc etc, thats not illegal. Well... maybe defamation. O.o But I think there is a huge difference between disrespect and crime. Come on, we're all TOLD to respect the flag, but we were all TOLD to respect our grade teachers too. If you don't earn it, you don't get it.CelesKnight wrote:I would say that it should be legal in general; however, there are times and places where it could be considered obscene enough for punishment of some kind--from breaking up the protest to a minor fine. Burning crosses falls under intimidation and threatening speech.
