Since the basketball season has started up, I thought I would start a basketball thread, let's keep this going througout the season.

Georgia Tech is really dominating No 1 UConn right now. I hope we can pull the upset, that will be very sweet. There's still 13 minutes left and anything can happen.

Don't worry none 'bout UGA, we kinda blow this year. It'll be a few years before we can get a competent program going again.

Shouldn't we just wait until tournament time? The rest of the season is pretty boring except when spanking the crap out of schools you hate.

Yeah, the season is not nearly exciting until the big dance runs around.

But...

Georgia Tech just won the preseason NIT. We dominated both Conneticuit and Texas Tech.

I think we can finish well and make it to the Big Dance. If we win all our OOC games, then even if we perform at the same level we did last year in the ACC, we would still have 20 wins.

And Dook, and North Carolina were exposed just recently.

I'm feeling good about GaTech basketball.

Arizona is off to a good start, losing a close one to Florida.

I like Arizona basketball but since it's about the only sport around here it gets pretty annoying at times. It's not like it's easy to go to the games. All the old fogey boosters get most of the tickets.

I thought I remembered this thread. How'd we just let it die? Isn't there anybody interested in college basketball here?

Updates on Georgia Tech basketball: ranked 5th in the AP poll and 6th in the ESPN poll, with first place votes in both. Go Jackets!

The first place shuffle continues.

The problem is that no sports should be allowed to overlap with football.

Also, college basketball isn't all that interesting until teams start playing conference games. It doesn't get real interesting until the push for conference tournaments spots and NCAA tournament bids.

Personally I'm not a big fan of conference tournaments because the only time they are nice is if your team blew chunks during the regular season and can pull a miracle out of its ass (Iowa a few years ago) so they can take a run at the NCAA. It kind of underminds some of the point of the regular season and I'm never sure who's the real conference champion since there's the regular champion and the tournament champion.

Since the Pac-10 has resumed it's conference tournament I've somewhat enjoyed it because Arizona has been kicking ass. People might not know that Lute Olson, Arizona's coach, was (and is) strongly against the Pac-10 tournament coming back. He felt that the players already miss enough class and that the conference tournament doesn't serve any purpose other than grubbing money for the conference. I tend to agree with him which is one of the reasons I like it when Arizona wins the tournament, or if they don't then one of the other teams that would have made it into the NCAA tournament anyway. He also thinks that it if they do anything conference tournaments so close to the NCAA tournament actual have a bad impact on teams.

For the record if any other team besides Maryland had beaten a number 15 and number 1 team in consecutive weeks (and played another ranked team to voertime) they would be in the top 25. Not Maryland...why may I ask?

That's a good question. Why aren't they rated?

They didn't blow some games against some really pathetic teams did they?

Considering the lack of love the Maryland football team seems to get maybe it's carrying over to the basketball team some this year? :?

By the way, the AP Poll has Maryland at No. 25. AP Basketball Poll on ESPN

Dont worry, hawkeyes got OWNED by the NOrTHERN IOWA PANTHERS! Hell Yeah! Suck it down black and gold pig dogs (those who care that is)

Iowa will eventually suck, why? Just go with me on this, they are not a good team.

Eh, this year is going to be the year of the Bearcat. Just watch, as usual the schedule is weak so don't expect any sudden jumps by them in the AP poll but watch them slowly climb up it. This year we're getting to the final four, hugs is recovered from his heart attack and is back at full strength and is pissed about his team playing so horrible last year. If you don't know huggins let me tell you, when he's pissed you listen and start playing better or you sit. He takes no shit at all, they may be hugs thugs but everyone of them knows who's in charge.

They've underachieved or just out and out sucked ass since they hired Alford as the coach. I'll be surprised if something different happens.

Personally I just don't think they can recruit well enough for basketball. Certainly the size of Iowa City doesn't help.

They're overcommitted to in-state prospects, Im not sure Alford's recruiting is getting out of the midwest enough frankly

Recruiting for basketball in Iowa just isn't going to get it done. There's just not the talent or obsessive state-wide interest in basketball compared to a lot of states.

There is obsessive state wide interest everywhere Ive been, just not enough talent. The last home grown guy Iowa had for four quality years was Dean Oliver (Mason City), and that team he played might have been better if Ricky Davis (Waterloo) didn't bail for the NBA so damn quick.

Also look at the guys Iowa missed out on. LaFrentz (Monona), Heinrich (Sioux City). and Collison (Iowa Falls) all went to the fucking Jayhawks. THe FucKinG kansas JAYHAWKS god how I hate them. At least I have the privilege of knowing that a freind of mine in elementary school depantsed Nick Collison while he was going for a dunk in a Varsity High School game.

Well, I really haven't spent much time there for 15½ years (since graduating high school). There was a fair amount of interest in high school bb but most of the people I knew who were interested in playing basketball did it more for fun in some intermural leagues. I guess my main point is that compared to some places I never remembered seeing a lot of people palying pickup games on their own.

Why would anyone in Iowa would want to go to Kansas to play? If you're good enough to attract that sort of attention why not go some place significantly different than staying at one of the instate schools. Sure Kansas has a better basketball rep but I'm sure there are schools from someplace warmer that would be interested in good players.

you know you could be right for the most part but I grew up in a couple of towns that are real big on basketball, I remember playing pickup games all through school right up until I graduated.

Those guys that went to Kansas instead of Iowa were on a team that was a national title contender year in and year out, which is more important to recruits nowadays than climate. As much as I hate Kansas they are one helluva powerhouse. Plus Larry Allen was there and he's an excellent coach.

Yes but they could have come to Arizona and been contenders and had a better climate. :D

It's ocassionally fun living in Tucson and being a UA grad because I know quite a few people back in Iowa who are still pissed that Lute Olson left Iowa for Arizona.

It's just because I hate sports, period. People don't shut up during fucking games, and it makes it irritating to study. I personally couldn't care less if every member of every UI team spontaniously dropped dead, but considering that most are cheaters and rapists that practically get free handjobs from the administration, it'd serve them right.

...Oops, did I say that? Sorry, got carried away with the rant... :|

I hate March. The only good thing is that my birthday is during Spring Break, so I can relax at home for it.

I suggest ear plugs. I often have to use them to sleep during the day so they might take some of the annoyance generated by the sports obsessed.

A little carried away with the "dropped dead" part but being stuck around sports fanatics can be very tiresome even if you like sports. I feel for you since you don't like to watch sports. Although, might I suggest checking out a women's volleyball match just for the learing potential of the uniforms that they wear. :D
Spanky The Dolphin wrote:I hate March. The only good thing is that my birthday is during Spring Break, so I can relax at home for it.
I take it that no one in your family follows college basketball on tv then? At that time frame it might actually be safe to be in Iowa City assuming the team isn't playing in any tournament. Except that I forgot that the women's team often hosts a game or two of the women's NCAA tournament. :?

It's funny, but your enthusiasm for sports reminds me of when the UofA men's basketball team won the tournament in '97. The school had this big get together for them at the football stadium I happened to park near there and was leaving class close to the start of whatever ceremony they were going to do. This guy was looking to part somewhere and I told him he'd probably be alright in the lot I was in and besides, he wasn't a student so it's not like he should care about a single ticket from campass police. He thanked me and then asked if I was going to the stadium. When I told him no he seemed almost shocked. Hey, I thought it was cool that they won but that's about it. I had better things to do with my time.

No one in my family honestly gives two shits about sports.

That might sound odd, but that's how I grew up.

EDIT: Although lately the Halo-ites seem to have taken over. It's like every fucking day they're screaming down the hall about some shit or such... :|

I don't think it's odd. I like sports much more than anyone else in my family but I can't say I'm obsessed with any of them. I like to watch football a lot but the Navy and now working nights have both lessened my viewership a great deal. I do follow what is going on in a lot of other sports but very rarely do I watch anything other than football and I don't even do that consistantly anymore.
