Ok, my first posted story and realy one of my first stories ever. Please read and enjoy, hopefuly you will like it.
The Briefing.
Admiral Daunte strode into the briefing room with a dark face, and quickly maneuvered his way to the head of the table where ten Starfleet Captains sat patiently waiting for him. He stood there quietly for a moment organizing his thoughts and looked around the table. Here sat some of Starfleet’s best officers, some of their most experienced commanders and their best hope for what was to come. Captain William Riker who sat just off of the Admirals right, was the new commander of the Enterprise, and was a flashy but brilliant tactician and a notable explorer with good instincts. Off to the Admiral’s left and across from Riker was Captain Sisko, not as flashy as Riker but every bit as good in a fight if not better. Also around the table was Captain Velma Tessgundo, one of the best engineers in Starfleet who had been the first Captain of the USS Nova. Yes this was the cream of the crop, hopefully they could think of something the others could not have. The Admiral was doubtful but who could tell?
Admiral Daunte cleared his throat and began the briefing.
“Thank you ladies and gentlemen for arriving so promptly,” he smiled weakly showing his general mood.
“To start with, the Admiralty has already been given this briefing and over the course of the next two to three weeks, all starship captains and station commanders will receive this briefing.”
He paused briefly for effect. “As some of you may already know, two months ago the Starship Discovery found an alien vessel adrift during their survey mission deep in the Beta Quadrant. This vessel did not match any known design we have yet come across, so the Captain of the Discovery stopped to take a look.”
Daunte reached down and pushed a few buttons on the control panel on the table, and behind him a view screen on the far wall of the briefing room came alive. On the screen was the actual footage from the Discovery showing the alien wreck. The ship was long and boxy, its engines protruded out of the aft end of the ship and its bow was slightly rounded. There were large holes in the hull but they did not seem to be the result of weapons fire, at least any weapon that the eleven people in the briefing room knew of.
“Here we see the vessel as the Discovery approached it.” Said the Admiral. “When the Discovery scanned it, they found that various systems were still operational onboard.”
Even Daunte turned around to watch the footage, he had seen it before but still found it hard not to watch it every chance he gave this briefing. “When the Discovery tried a remote data transfer, they met with unexpected results,” As he said this, the alien vessel expanded into a huge fireball towards the survey ship. Fiery chunks of debris shot towards the camera, some to bounce of the shields in front of the sensors.
“The Discovery was slightly damaged but not seriously hurt, it stayed to analyze the debris and found some things of note,” he said as the screen behind him went blank and the footage ended. “This is the reason we have called you here.” Explained the Admiral. “The upload had some success before the destruction of the ship and some pieces of the computer core and weapons systems were recovered and analyzed with some unique data coming from it.”
“First off, the vessel seems not to be from this galaxy.” He stated bluntly, with the expect murmurs resulting from the audience. “It took the Science Council over a week to translate most of the audio data not to mention the transcribed data. However when they were done, they found a partial navigational chart that had star formations unheard of in this galaxy, further more some names of planets that we have never before heard mentioned. More interestingly, it seems that the culture that this ship belongs to is a galaxy wide civilization.”
On his right a hand went up, and Admiral Daunte nodded at Captain Riker. “Sir, if this ship is from another galaxy, then how did it end up here?”
“We do not know for sure, but exurbs from the ships log say they were investigating some sort of hyper wormhole effect in their own galaxy. We can only assume that this super wormhole pulled them here, when we found them there was no evidence of a subspace anomaly that we could detect, and no life forms onboard the vessel before it exploded.” Concluded the Admiral.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this situation is this,” here he pause to look at every captain in the eye one by one.
“This ship, if our translation is right, is a Crakken class cruiser. It seems to be a light cruiser or an escort cruiser as far as we can tell. It was roughly 350 meters long and supported 10 weapons turrets. Its power plant is a mystery to us, we do not know how it operates nor on what principle that it works. Its FTL system is also a mystery to us, though preliminary simulations suggest something to the order of a slipstream drive. Although this new drive is far more advance than the Delta Quadrant variant, and the preliminary data suggest that it is faster than conventional warp drive by a factor of a hundred.” Again this created a buzz around the table as various people leaned toward one another and whispered their disbelief.
“Some good news,” began Admiral Daunte loudly to regain control of the room. “The vessels sub light engines appear to be vary similar to our own impulse engines and data suggests that acceleration and maneuverability would be some what comparable.”
Here the Admiral paused again, and reached back down to the table’s controls. After a few seconds a schematic of the Crakken cruiser came on the screen with some technical data projected on it as well.
“Their weapon systems, however are more straight forward, they seem to be a hybrid of high power lasers and a sort of particle beam that delivers an extremely large amount of energy to their target on the order of gigatons.” Again Daunte smiled weakly at the news. “There were ten weapon mounts on the vessel for these types of weapons, and various other mounts for smaller or other weaponry.”
Daunte leaned onto the table with a sadden look on his face. “Keep in mind that these are escort vessels and the data implies that there are large craft that we could have to deal with.” The Admiral slunk down even more as the obvious settled onto the audience.
“To put it simply, one of these cruisers could fire up to ten gigatons worth of weapons fire at a target at once, easily overcoming our biggest ships shields and destroying said ship in one salvo.” Here again there were whispers around the room. “To put it simply we can not repel fire power of that magnitude, these Crakken ships could slaughter our ships easily.” Said the Admiral with a note of finality.
“Sir,” said Captain Flox Mortenia, an Andorian in command of the USS Fearless. “How do we know these people would be hostile, you seem to indicate that they would be?”
At this Daunte smiled again, not out of humor but out of frustration. “The ships log that we found indicated that they knew about the anomaly. It also suggests that they knew that there was some sort of civilization on the other side of it. Did they send a science vessel? A survey ship? No, they sent this. A ship designed for war, as such we can only determine that they are an aggressive species and we must start to take precautions against their presence in this galaxy.”
Again a hand came up to ask a question, and the admiral acknowledged Captain Tessgundo. “Admiral, if we reversed the negative ion stream of our navigational deflectors to a theta phase signature and-“ here the Admiral interrupted her and said. “Sorry Captain, but we already thought of that, and we are afraid that it won’t work.” He said shaking his head.
“Sir,” said Captain Sisko, “What if we recalibrated our quantum signature so the polarity was in tune with…..” Again Daunte had to stop them in mid sentence, for he already knew what they were about to say. The researchers at the R&D facility had already thought of that. “Again no Captain, we thought of that as well, and the data suggests that that would not work.”
All was quiet at the table for long moments. What could they do, what possible solution could they try to stop something like this? There was an audible gasp from Captain Tessgundo, with her hand in front of her mouth she spoke softly, “My god there is nothing we can do!”

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
Thank you both.
