Windows 98 "Critical" updates ? (help needed)

Post by 2000AD »

Backstory: My PC's CD-Drive is a bet messed up, because my brother tried to install a copy of Call of DUty he got off of a friend. When he tried to install it it said that Windows wasn't updated enough or something according to him. Since then the CD drive hasn't been working, games can be installed, but they can't be run off the CD.

He's trying to pin the blame on me for not keeping Win98 up to date with numeroous "critical updates" but i have heard jack shit about these, not a squeek, not even an email from MS despite they're pestering to update IE.

SO:

1) Is it the lack of these downloads that's caused this?
2) If not then what is the most likely cause? (and how the fuck fdo i fix it)

Any help would be really appreciated.

Not keeping up to date on "cricitcal updates" would not cause that. He's just trying to pass the blame for his mistake onto you. The "critical updates" are things like security fixes for the OS and IE.

Could be DirectX or something, but critical updates rarely cause a program not to be installed.

Thanks guys, i'm going to have a go at going through all of the stuff he's installed and seeing if there's something there tommorow (I'm currently in a LoTR high).
When i vented about this Einy mentioned something called VIRII (a Virus?), could this have done this?

Virii is plural for virus. :) Check for spyware as well.

It's a pity that the correct word is "viruses" and not "virii," no?

If you have a burned and thus pirated copy of Call to Duty the CD certainly coud have had a virus. And no, like the other mentioned not running Windows Updates for you 98 box, would not normally break the OS. They are usually bug fixes and security updates. He might have trashed something like Phongn mentioned, DirectX maybe.

Do you get an error message when you try to run a game? You said you can install. Have you tried to play a music CD to see what happens?

I haven't actually tried out the games yet so i'll have to see, i'll try the music as well.

EDIT:
Music CD's aren't read and Games give the standard "insert correct CD and restart" message.
Going through my computer and clickind on the drive i get:
D:\ is not accessable
The device is not ready
*Cancel**Retry*

I'll dig out a game i haven't got installed later to see if my brother was talking bull about the just install thing.

Maybe the driver for the HD-Controller is broken. Simply check it in system control, if the is something wrong. By try, you could simply remove and re-install them to test it. This driver is by the way the only one critical for the CD-drive in Win98.....

My brothers finally admitted it's his fault, so he's getting one of his friends (Who builds computers and stuff) to come round and fix it. I'll let him do this as this isn't my main PC (That's packed in a box after being brought home form uni) and it is a few years old now, so if it's gets broke it's not exactly a big deal to me as i only use it when i'm home form uni now. Apparently he's going to get it upgraded as well. I'll believe it when i see it.

However i will check the drivers later on just as soon as i dig out the driver CD from wherever my idiot brothers left it. Thanks to everyone for the help (and suggestions about what to do to my bro).
