Cheering/Booing at cinemas

Post by 2000AD »

I've never done this or seen it, but i've heard from numerous people how some films (or trailers etc.) were cheered/jeered. Anyone do this or have memories of some good ones?

Audiences went nuts during The Wrath of Kahn when Kirk opened up on the Reliant.

The only movie i myself have cheered are the Star Wars films (and only on opening night).

I witness cheering in movies on a fairly regular basis. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Matrix get their share of cheers--Freedy Versus Jason had a really devoted crowd as well--but once in a while there'll be a really good movie that doesnt have a pre-existing fanbase but nevertheless recieves cheers in specific scenes or applause when its over. I recall ID4, Gladiator and Kill Bill getting their share of props, and Snatch got a big applause at its finish as well. Cant remember any more but once in a while a movie just strikes a chord with an audience.

Not in the theaters, but:

Were watching FotR in Language Arts class, and I hear the girl behind me go "Oh, NO!" when the Nazghul are getting all stabbity on the Hobbit beds (due to the tricky camera cuts).

When I saw Ferris Bueller's Day off, the audience really loved it.

In my experience, every opening day showing of any movie will have cheering or booing, of the trailers/ads and of the movie.

My favorite time was seeing EPI on opening day in 1999, and when the trailer for Titan A.E. came on, everybody started rabidly booing it, mostly I think because it was a competing sci-fi franchise rather than because we hated it. Then when the 20th Cent. FOX logo came on, we were cheering wildly, and then when the Lucasfilm logo came on, we were cheering even wildlier, and then when the A LONG TIME AGO... line came on, we cheered even wildlierest, which we would have previously thought impossible.

Just the other day when I went to see The Last Samurai, people were cheering every time Tom Cruise would finish a fight.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Yeah a few years ago i went to see FOTR. I decided to go during the day to avoid a packed cinema. I turned up and the place was full of sprogs. When Aragorn decapped the head Urik(sp) the entire class rose to their feet and applauded. I now take a stun gun with me to the cinema to avoid such occurances.

when Generations was in the theater, one of the trailers was for the re-release of the original trilogy. Well, it was news to me and apparantly most people and the place went wild.

When I went to see Attack Of The Clones a rather... annoying... female friend of mine was cheering all through the film and especially during Yoda's fight at the end... She was, however, the only one doing it. :? I was biting my tongue trying not to say "shut the fuck up!" Otherwise, I have never seen people boo or cheer during a movie.

There was lots of cheering and commenting during the SE release of Star Wars. Especially for Darth Vader. There was one comment about Luke kissing his sister as well.

Otherwise I encounter it from time to time usually when the villian gets it or when the hero escapes impending doom.

The most embarassing moment was when I was a kid and one of the guys who was watching ET with us jumped out of his seet and cheered during one of the later parts of the movie. I think he ended up falling on the floor of the theater.

Imagine, if you will, a group of SCA renactors who had been invited to the premiere of Braveheart. Every last man in a kilt, every woman in plaid, taking up the middle rows of the theatre.
Do you remember the scene where they kill William's wife? There were no boos from the gathered SCAdians... only a low angry growl.
Do you remember when the Princess told Edward Longshanks that her child wasn't his son's? There was a loud rousing cheer.
And at the end, when the Bruce asks if the gathered Scots would fight with him, there was a resounding 'Hell yeah'.

Its their way of giving respect to the film and its makers. Its just a natural human habit--i know its not like theres live performers but its a way of publicly showing your appreciation for a work.

My experience is cheers/jeers usually happen at a popular film during the first day or two. Or when a film just really sucks.

I remember seeing the trailer for the Special Edition of Star Wars down in Westwood. The whole theatre roared. Later when we saw the movie, I was interested to see people boo Luke, and praise Han.

When Luke whines about not being able to go into town everyone went "......Aaaaaaaw..." a heavy sarcastic tone.

Recently, when I saw the Last Samurai, everytime Tom Cruise sliced off somebody's head some guy three rows down would clap and yell "That's what I'm talkin' bout!"

Return of the King! Man, people were going nuts in that movie, there were cheering, crying, clapping and generally roudy reactions to it. There was definitely a huge reaction to the films and it was great. I was among those cheering and I'll admit I had to work to not cry at times.

Of course that sort of thing is half what makes those so much fun.

I remember watching Minority Report with Inge. It was when Tom Cruise being surrounded by the cops. Those cops were armed by some stick (baton?) that makes someone throws up when hit.

At first we just thought that the target will just feel nauseous or such, but when a cop, accidentally getting hit at his neck, was vomiting like hell, we both burst into laugther, and LOUDLY. It was HILARIOUS.

The audiences around us start complaining but what the hell, it was one of our wild days.

Those days.....

Damn, this thread reminds me how I miss Inge so much...

When the words "Return of the King" came up and the music started playing someone shouted "YESSSS" as loud as they could and it made the cinema erupt in laughter :) That was quite fun I thought.

The only mass booing I've seen was when the "Mask Returns" teaser trailer ran before the ROTK came on.

Oh yeah, when I was at the ROTJ SE, everybody was laughing at all the sexual innuendo between Vader and Palpatine. That was pretty awesome.

People clapped at the end of the RotK showing I saw today. (Including me and my father, of course.)
Don't hate; appreciate!

I can't talk....

I have Chaparoned my little sister and her friends to more midnight showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show, then I care to elaborate....

BTW do you know how embarrassing it is to be the one guy over 18 accompanying a small cluster of 14-15 year olds to an Rated Movie (Because my sister had blackmailed me)
