Lore Oddity
Here's an unusual note: At the end of "Datalore," Lore is beamed into space. When he appears in "Brothers," Lore explains that he was found by a Pakled ship, who then either reassembled or reactivated him. If it was "reassembled" this presents a weird situation: the transporter, if set to wide dispersion, wouldn't have materialized enough of Lore to reassemble. If not, he would have materialized intact.
If I remembered that wrong, and it was just "reactivated" it still presents an odd conundrum. The Pakleds defining characteristic is that they're stupid. How did they figure out how to reactivate the most advanced type of android in Federation existence without a diagram, manual or even, most likely, the ability to recognize that that's what Lore is? This is especially troubling since it took the Federation flagship's Chief Engineer and CMO (and why would Crusher know anything about robotics?) to do it the first time?

That was disapointing ..Should we show this Federation how to build a ship so we may have worthy foes? Typhonis 1

Actually, I don't think the Pakleds were really that stupid. They like to "pretend" to be stupid in order to elicit help from unwary travelers. They were able to piece together equipment from many different species and make it work. They probably could have put Lor back together if he wasn't in too many pieces.
Lor brings up an interesting question though. The crew of the Enterprise D was usually against executing criminals or their enemies. How they could casually "kill" Lor is interesting, considering that they treated Data as a sentient being.

I agree they seem pretty smart once they had Jeordi captive onboard. Like Yoda the Dumn this is just and act or side affect of their physiologyCommander LeoRo wrote:Actually, I don't think the Pakleds were really that stupid. The Pakleds are clever in that they're very devious, but their technical knowledge is still lacking, they bought the whole Crimson Forcefield crap for instance, and I'm guessing that most of the equipment they had was put together by others they captured like Geordi who were forced to teach them.Commander LeoRo wrote:Actually, I don't think the Pakleds were really that stupid. Alone, without help, I don't see how they could've put Lore back together.
Though, perhaps it was trial and error, and they reassembled enough of him to activate him, and then he did the rest.

Remember the episode:
All they did was beam Lore out into space. They didn't bother to set the transporter for wide field dispersion. He wasn't even deactivated beforehand.
So when the Pakleds picked him up, Lore was still intact and functioning. Probably killed the crew and took the ship.

Seems rather bizzare that the Federation doesn't have laws against cruel and unusual punishment. Beaming an android out into space certainly seems to fit into that category.Patrick Degan wrote:All they did was beam Lore out into space. (Not to mention the minor little issues like putting someone on trial before effectively looking them up in solitary confinement for an indefinite period...)

I thought they simply dismatled him into arms and legs. Surely even Packleds can figure out humanoid anatomy. Especially as trek is the owrst offender for this.

Well, that actually happened at the end of "Descent, Part II". Data deactivated and dismantled Lore, and that's the last that's been seen of him... so far.NecronLord wrote:I thought they simply dismatled him into arms and legs. But still, he did say (quite clearly) that the Pakleds reactivated him... so how did he get deactivated? The only thing I can think of is:
1. He was out there for a couple of years... maybe he has a "sleep mode"?
2. Soong-type androids cannot function in hard vacuum for extended periods of time.
As I recall, Lore had already prepared coordinates to beam an object out into space near the giant snowflake. According to his "plan", the Enterprise would destroy the object with its weapons to warn the entity that they were dangerous. Of course, his actual plan was that the entity would attack the ship while the shields were down for transport. Nonetheless, the transporter probably already had coordinates when Wesley engaged it and beamed Lore off the ship.
