They'll probably put a restaurant or something on the top floor of the biggest building, just so people can dine with a nice view. Although I'm not sure that many people would even want to do that.

It's kinda cheating- it'll only be taller than the one in Taipei because it'll have this huge freaking spire- thought I don't know if the one in Taipei is cheating in that regard as well, so ...

The Sears Tower still has the highest occupied floor in the world, and that will continue for quite some time.

It was built in the late sixties and early seventies, but the Port Authority (the agency which concieved the whole project and owned the complex until the early 90's, IIRC) was planning it during the Kennedy administration. It was very much a product of the postwar urban planning philosophy that saw the unplanned jumble of a "natural" city as something that should be shunned and swept away by planned cities--plowing an entire neighborhood under and interrupting the street grid was seen as a good thing by the men who concieved the WTC. Couple that with modernist architecture, which actively shunned making buildings beautiful on purpose, and you got a dull, lifeless complex that took twenty years to be accepted by New Yorkers as part of their city.

Well if you feel so bad about it get a "Fatman" Replica built and place it in the Plaza.

Freerepublic is very cool at times:
The odd thing about its unfinished appearance is that, in the Arab world, many many buildings have that unfinished look. And for a reason. An unfinished structure is not subject to taxes. As long as it is officially "under construction," real estate taxes are not levied. So if you want to build a 2-story home, you build it with rebar sticking out the top, as if you intend to build a third story. You then claim that you actually intend to build that third story. Result - no real-estate taxes due until you finish the house.

Further, in the Arab world, many don't trust banks and instead put any windfalls into home construction. Homes may be constructed over a period of a great many years. You come into some money - you put it in the unfinished and unoccupied house. Eventually, you'll finish it and it's your retirement. They do the same with office and apartment buildings. They can top-out a building's structure - and then the thing just sits, sometimes for many years, until they get the funds to move forward. There is seemingly no time limit on building permits.

This design looks like something an Arab would conjure up.

Hm... If they had done that, I'd say the memorial could be done kinda Vietnam War Memorial-ish... A wall with the names etched into it with those killed, one placed in each tower for those who died in there. And outside another for the FDNY, NYPD, and Port Authority who died, as well as those on the airliners (or, for the airliners, a seperate wall in the building their plane went into). But that's just me...

And didn't they make a WTC Memorial already? With the big globe thingy from the original and a flame?

Other than sentimental value, I can't see the advantage of remaking the exact same mistakes they made when they first built the WTC.

Actually, that appears to be the watchtower of Cirith Ungol, not the mighty Tower of Barad-dur.

bleh, you´d create a symbol of something dead.
build a new one, a cooler, better, bigger, more efficient one.
i don´t like liebeskinds design (richard meiers was the best) but it´s definately better than the old boring, sixties crap style, bullshit boxes.

oh, and can someone explain, why you would want the symbol of new york to blend into the city? it´s a fucking representative building, it needs to stick out and screem at everyone, you want a building which you think of when someone says "new york", similar to the opera when somebody says "sidney".

That's what the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building are for. :D

Still, since they are rebuilding I do think it is better to have something more interesting looking than the old Tradecenter Towers. I don't particularly care for the new design's huge metal latice work "just to make it tall". The spire is fine since lots of buildings do that but there's an awful lot of latice work there just to make the whole building look bigger.

Since a pussy little spire counts for building height, I say we add a 100ft tower to the top of the Sears Tower (which is still in my mind the rightful owner of the title) and not worry about the new WTC.

I think there should be one big fat building, like the Great Pyramid.

since 9/11 it´s impossible for the wtc not to be THE city´s representative building.

one thing that annoys me about this design is all that cheesy symbolism
such as the higth which is the same as the date of declaration of independance and esspecially this cone of light projected on 9/11 at 08:andsomeminutes. symbolism ok, but this i find to be overdone and makes it look rediculous, sort of like if disney made a 9/11 cartoon.

i like this design by richard meier. white, shiny towers, shapes without fancy shmanzy, weird angles while still being something completely new, a fairily simple shape which is easy to remember (so you´ll think of it first when you hear "new york")
