On a dialup up connection that happens to stay connected for long periods of time- computer has been acting weird lately, w/ /etc/X11/X being relinked to /usr/bin/true and some mozilla files have been deleted, among other things. Some package MD5sums are missing (then again, not all debian packages have MD5sums due to some lazy developers). It seems to have begun when I installed Apache2, but after restoration from backup I still see some strange behavior- 2 normal links to the X server in /etc/X11, though this might be dpkg crashing, but I have not installed any X related package in a while.
I've nuked everything and restored from backup, but I still don't feel safe- then again, I've also found out that sshing into shell accounts is painfully laggy, which might deter a cracker (along w/ rotating IP addresses- however I now have a dyndns account set up though). I've also left broken firewall rules on for short periods of time, such as allowing all source ports above 1500 in, instead of destination ports. Nmaps to localhost or from external IP address show open ports, but I don't think this is a good indicator, since that goes through the loopback device, which allows everything.
Am I just excessively paranoid, or is it the fault of some broken debian unstable package or other?
