I see what you mean, and I concede the point--though I contest the minor side issue of an infantry army conquering all the way out to the Urals. It would be possible but the time and expense required, when compared with the benefits, are minimal. I expect that the Romans would stop expanding into the trackless steppe shortly after taking the black earth belt.
The wealth is in the land, a proper land reform policy needs a lot of estates to grant to influential citizens to help establish Roman colonies along major rivers such as the volga. Doing so increases trade possibilities all throughout the Baltic and Black Seas region which would bring wealth into the Empire, a lot of wealth. The city of Kiev grew enourmously wealthy off of this exact river trade and Rome would have been able to exploit it as surely as those merchants eight centuries later.

I just thought of something. Because I and the Praetorians would be immortal and invincible, we could use this as a demonstration to the barbarians that were are gods. They could not kill us, and as a result would fear and worship us. This could be used to pacify them. Plus, 9000 immortals would be very useful in battle.

Well, can't argue with what Pablo said. History is on his side. But Damn, if that doesn't piss me off...

Thanks for making me a second class citizen, asshole.
Pablo beat me to your post, so I'll just point you there. And no, I don't have anything personal against Christians. They were, however, bad for the Empire, and thus would be on my "thngs to get rid of" list. I wasn't picking solely on them, by the way. Did you miss my resettlement program for the Germans?

Have a very nice day.
