The new Winamp 5.01

Post by Hamel »

Man, I tell ya, you'll need something better than a 1Ghz cpu to run this without crapping down your system~ Gobbled 50% of my processor

I like the modern 2.x style skin, but it doesn't let you detatch the EQ -.- cmon

I'm sticking with the unofficial 2.95 until I upgrade my pootar
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

I'm wavering between Foobar2000 and Winamp 5 -- though WA5 using the classic skin isn't too bad.

I tried 3 for a while. Got tired of it and went back to 2.

At first I was all like "winamp skins sucks, you can't really make whatever skin you like", but after using W3 I got tired and annoyed because I could never find the play button or the volume - every time I changed skins :P

Winamp 2 is the best mp3 player ever for me. It's "video player" is a bit annoying tho.

Geez, I was reinstalling my system, so I thought "why not install the new winamp?". So I dloaded the 3 when it came out...and after two days of feeling increasingly frustrated...and after waiting like 10 seconds for an mp3 file to open...and then to watch how it eats 50% of processor usage...I got back to the 2.61, which is just perfect - small, lightweight and easy to operate.

Winamp 3 isn't that bad- even runs okayish (as in as slow as mozilla(but people find mozilla acceptable, so meh)) on a PII-266 (haven't tried it on the PII-450, since it obviously doesn't run on Linux (heard rumors of a Linux port though- XMMS irritates me by the fact that it doesn't use GTK2).

I've been using Winamp 2.92 (IIRC) so anyway, I usually use XMMS when I'm running Linux.

The lack of GTK2 in XMMS doesn't bother me much. At least it works and isn't too clumsy.

Using 3.0c here... I haven't had any problems and I see no need to change versions.

It does. IIRC, it comes with an inbuilt ripper for Ogg Vorbis, but you need to get a paid version if you want an MP3 ripper that can do the same bitrates as the .ogg one.

I rather like the skinning engine in Winamp 5, plus it's the first version to support non-English encoding without an additional plugin (Tixsoft Fontplug is running close to 4 years without an update, and there are numerous bugs in it, so I don't want to rely on it). On the downside, it consumes a bit under half of my CPU cycles and takes close to 10 seconds to load with Winamp 3 style skins, which are required for international text support. I'll stick with Winamp 2.92 for now, thanks.

I've been using WMP3 since it came out, I've never had any problems whatsoever.

Versions prior to the second release of WA2.81 have a security flaw in them, by the way.

There are plugins available for Winamp (Rocksteady is an example) that do what is called "dynamic compression" to make the loud parts not so loud and the quiet parts louder. Don't use it, such things are evil.

Another tool is called ReplayGain, which essentially writes a bit of information to the ID3 tag telling your player to adjust the volume on a per-file basis. It is not dynamic compression, however.

I was a die-hard winamp(2.72 German) user until a few weeks ago. I bought a new cd and it wouldn't let me add it to my playlist or even want to find it. I tried WMP3 and 5, but I still had the same problem.
I use Quintessential Player 4.1 now and I'm happy with it.(the defaul skin sucks but you can download others)

0 % of processor use and 8.800 Kb Ram on my xomputer
