"Bush signs parts of Patriot Act II into law — stealthi

Post by h0rus »

"On December 13, when U.S. forces captured Saddam Hussein, President George W. Bush not only celebrated with his national security team, but also pulled out his pen and signed into law a bill that grants the FBI sweeping new powers. A White House spokesperson explained the curious timing of the signing - on a Saturday - as "the President signs bills seven days a week." But the last time Bush signed a bill into law on a Saturday happened more than a year ago - on a spending bill that the President needed to sign, to prevent shuttng down the federal government the following Monday."

Wow! Were you looking at the Michigan Militia homepage too? (BTW, I'm not joking. I saw a link to this article from there)
"In the new trilogy, Anakin Skywalker portrays a damning indictment of technology's modern dehumanization of mankind through Hayden Christensen's lifeless, almost inhuman performance. There is a river of tragedy in every robotic line he utters, a horrific monotonal indication of his cyborgal fate."-Dr. Albert Oxford, PhD

The next time an American cries "You live in a totalitarian state!" I shall simply wave such a comment off knowing if anyone's becoming Oceania, it's the US of A.

Agreed, and those god damn "riders", you need to make it so that
you cannot tack on riders at the last minute to try and torpedo a bill or
add pork to a popular bill

Here is the link to HR2417 on congress.gov.

I've tried to churn through some of it tonight but like most legislation, its boring as hell so I'll try again on the marrow. Anyway, haven't come across the segments that the article mentioned but I didn't get too far into the bill.

Anyhoo, with the topic, I figured someone would want the info.

Well, with Saddam captured, and the economy making gains, the Democrats need something to use in 2004. Now all they have to hope for is PATRIOT III, which is little more than John Ashcroft wiping his ass with the Constitution, and the whole thing being caught on tape.

YES!

All bills should be restricted by Constitutional amendment to a single (broad) subject. For example: education, defense, transportation, something like that.

Well, while there is probably alot in the Intell Authorization Act that will sound like Patriot II to alot of people, and they might be right, it is not Patriot II. Saying Patriot II is a nice little label to get the hackels up on alot of people.

BTW, sorry my linky don't work. Plug HR2417 into your search engine.

Coudn't we also solve the problem of riders on bills by giving the President the right to line item veto?

That's it. I am not voting for any of these assclowns we have in the White House come 2004. (Who I'll vote for remains in question, but it ain't gonna be Bush.) And yes, I am a registered Republican.

So now I'm fully supporting the ACLU if they try to push to get this stuff declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court...

It's not going to help if the president wants the riders to go through.

That's still just working around the problem. We could just ban riders entirely.

If you have a pet project that you want, YOU GET TO PUSH IT THROUGH CONGRESS YOURSELF. Not tack it onto the Help the Poor Bill, version XXVII.

Hmm...sounds very fishy. I've never been a fan of the Patriot Act, but I do wish that this article would tell more about the specific laws signed into it, other than the 'financial institutions' section.

The Senate passed it with a voice vote to avoid individual accountability. While broadening the definition of "financial institution," the Bush administration is ramping up provisions within the 2001 USA Patriot Act, which granted the FBI the authority to obtain client records from banks by merely requesting the records in a "National Security Letter." To get the records, the FBI doesn't have to appear before a judge, nor demonstrate "probable cause" - reason to believe that the targeted client is involved in criminal or terrorist activity. Moreover, the National Security Letters are attached with a gag order, preventing any financial institution from informing its clients that their records have been surrendered to the FBI. If a financial institution breaches the gag order, it faces criminal penalties. And finally, the FBI will no longer be required to report to Congress how often they have used the National Security Letters.
