Was talking to my grandmother and Uncle Len tonight, and I learnt
that the wonderful Socialized Medicine superstate that Mike so espouses,
actually charges you for health care if you get hurt and treated outside
your home province
So you have to pay extra if you're on a day trip in Quebec, and you
live in Ontario and break your leg

Just stupid legislation. Doesn't mean there's something wrong with the system.

Actually, they don't care where you hurt yourself, but if you go into a Quebec hospital to get it treated, then there's a lot of extra paperwork to handle your claim because you're insured in the province of Ontario.
BTW, perhaps you could explain how this is worse than being charged no matter where you are when you get hurt, as it is in the US.

Completely false, on a mountain bike trip in Quebec last year I was hospitalized for an allergic reaction to multiple bee stings. The had me hooked up on an IV drip after the doc gave me a needle with the antidote. I was kept at the hospital for observation from about 8pm to 2am. They also provided me with a 3 day supply of pills in case I got stung again. Cost? Nothing. Oh, and the nurse was a hottie with cute French accent.

So, we're supposed to assume from an anecdotal retelling of a possible downside which is still not enough to make it worse than the American alternative, is enough to not dare go over to a socialized health care system.
And people wonder why I think those who are rabidly anti-socialist are idiots.

Nope, you get charged if you're out of the country, but for out of province stuff the most they'll do is charge you with some administration fees. These fees are rarely over $100, the usual charge is around 15-45 dollars. I can tell you this because between me, my sister, and my brother we've been hospitalized in all 10 provinces in Canada while being residents in only 3 of them.

Oh yeah, right...because they Americans don't pay the admin fee, they get to pay for the cost of the entire hospital visit, but hey, at least they don't pay the administration fee...oh wait a minute...what's that thing on the hospital bill?....

Ha! I have you all beat. I have full medical and dental care provided to me free of cost by the US government. That's right, I don't pay a cent for doctor visits, dentist visits, medicine, etc. Of course I do have to go to war every now and then...

Rock on brother. I'm looking forward to that. But first, boot camp .

I work at a hospital which self insures through a real insurance company. This means we can generally go where ever that insurance company is accepted but most of the time we are required to use the services provided by the hospital. Soooo, that being said it costs me $50 a visit to use the Emergency Room and if we still had urgent care it would be $35 a visit. (Urgent Care is listed on my insurance card but since I'm a TMC employee I'm required to use our services but we no longer officially have an urgent care. It's still there but it's considered part of ER now. Cheap Bastards.)
I have been informed that if I am injured and in an ambulance I should request I be taken to the hospital that I work at otherwise I will likely get hit with much of the bill.
It has also been suggested that if I am injured out of the city or state it might be more cost effective for me to pay to have myself transported to the hospital I work at. Either way we're likely talking thousands of dollars out of pocket.
Now, I understand that this is a unique and crapy situation but this is American Healthcare by an American Healthcare provider as it provides for it's own employees. Pretty crapy if you ask me.
On a good note. I understand the hospital has recently contracted with a collection agency in Mexico inorder to track down wealthy Mexicans who come up here for hospital services and then book across the border without paying anything.

I feel your pain. I too work/go to school through a hospital and my insurance prices suck. The plan we are on now is alright, though we still pay to much for out of system care. Our ER copays are $35, but if you go to the hospital your employed at (only the one you are employed at, this does not happen in the other system hospitals) they half that so its $17.50.
Well, not anymore. We are being moved to a new plan, that damn near requires you to go to your employer hospital for even the slightest billing benefits. This sucks horribly because my hospital is not considered a trauma hospital. So if i was in any type of serious accident and came there, i would be transferred in a heartbeat. Not only that but our copays are being increased to $75.00 for emergency care and i think $35 for doctor's visits. To add even more salt to the wound, our hospital just received a new budget manager who must REALLY not like us. No more half copays in our hospital. The admissions department used to be able to get an employee private rooms for free as a courtesy, thats gone.
In the end healthcare blows no matter what end you're on, and i am seriously considering another profession.

And I usually chell out 300skr = ~$25 for a separate helt inshurance check worth $1.000.000 if I happen to be injured. Treatment for diving related injuries can be really expensive and most asian countrys don't start up treatment if they ain't sure in getting the cash. A miljon dollar check takes care of that.

Going by the last year I have figures for, healthcare costs per person in Canada is roughly $2500 US. For Americans the figure is about $4900 US. Gee, I wonder which system I prefer.

US government & StatsCan websites. Total US healthcare expenditure is roughly $1.4 trillion, divide by population. Total Canadian healthcare expenditure is about $88 billion, once again, divide by population.
