It actually means quite a bit to me. But it usually ends up a dissapointment. It's almost expected that you go to a party, get a bit drunk and kiss a stranger at mid night. I usually end up spending the night in with my parents, and i fecking hate that.
This year i'm working till 5, but as soon as it's 5 i'm on the bus to my sisters. She arranging a party and a date for me. I'm in 2 minds about it. When i get this excited over something it usualy blows up in my face. Yet when i'm noncleant(sp) good things happen. Either way i plan to be pissed as a fart by 11pm.

Tonight, I get wrecked with my friends. I like New Year's because to me it signifies a new beginning.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

I wish I had a more casual view about New Year's like some of the other views expressed in the thread.
For a long time, I've made a big deal about the New Year's to make sure I was doing something special to bring in the new year, and thus get myself stressed out about it. My standard New Year's celebration involves going into NYC and going to a party and drinking a lot or seeing a show. The main thing is being with good friends and having a good time.

I used to associate New Years with the Balls the Army would hold (that's dinner/dances, before someone goes for the obvious joke), then I associated it with Corporate Parties. This year it'll be... fuck knows. I'm out with friends tonight, but there's nothing planned, just the usual mess around.
Back home, Hogmanay is a big thing (or used to be, haven't been home on New Years since I was 17). The Family would throw a huge party with friends from what seemed like the whole of Glasgow turning up. Lots of women (non-relation) to kiss and fondle and plenty of alchohol (unless you were under 16, in which case only moderate supplies of alchohol ). Basically it was fun.
So to me New Years is about having fun with family/Friends with much kissing and fondling of women (whilst strenuously avoiding any dancing as I can't), and the occassional getting dressed up in Uniform/suit.

Massive party at my old best friend's house with people I love dearly, some of whom I haven't seen since last new year's.
I look forward to it for about 51 weeks.

I'm off this year to get drunk, and we already found appropriate desingnated drivers. Wives, who will berate their husbands appropriately (that and where it's held is close enough for me to stagger to a Metro/subway station).

Hell yeah. I remember being in Edinburgh for New Years a few ago, i was dating a Scots lassie at the time. It was fecking mental. I swear i was hungover for a week afterwards.
To this day unknown scotmen walk up to me ask me how i'm doing and talk about a party i can barely remember.

Re: Who makes a big deal out of New Year's Eve?
No particular interest on my part. It can be a time to get together with friends and have an excuse to party, but the actual event itself isn't all that interesting. Just another notch on the calender. I'm working this New Years anyhow...I usually do and don't care.Darth Wong wrote:With New Year's Eve coming up, I thought the question should be asked: do any of you make a big deal out of it? Personally, I couldn't care less. It comes too soon on the heels of Christmas, and its only significance to me is a calendar change.
It used to be big for my family with get togethers and parties but that has slowly dwindled and fankly I prefer to stay home, tune in to ABC and watch Dick Clark (Has that man aged AT ALL since the 70's?) as I have done since I was 5 for the 15 minutes before midnight then switch off the TV or watch a movie on DVD.
It's more of a pain in the ass for me because we get those pathetic loser toursist who decide to bring their fucking broods into Times Square and for this whole week just take up space gawking while I'm trying to get around during my lunch break or trying to go home.
They flood the streets today to be there for the ball. LOSERS. I have to escape from my fucking office before 5 if I want to avoid police checkpoints and crowds of midwestern hicks. UGH.

I see it as a chance to look back on the year past, and to look forward to the year about to begin- and of course, to party and dance

Re: Who makes a big deal out of New Year's Eve?
For any of the younger Brits or other non-Americans reading this, the Ball the Americans are refering to when they say "Watching the Ball Drop ", is a huge Sphere made of Bulbs. It's mounted on a mast on top of a Building in Times Square and then at Midnight it drops 30-40 feet down the mast. For some reason this has something to do with new year, no one but Americans know or indeed care what that something may be.
So now you know and don't have to wonder why Americans are talking about the onset of puberty in boys becoming a spectator event, every New Years Eve.

It's an excuse for me to be with friends and get hammered, so I'll take it. Tonight, I'm going up to Milwaukee to see an old friend I haven't seen in about 2 1/2 years, and I'll be staying with her until Sunday.

While this is true - like Keevan, Hogmanay has fond memories for me, plus all the Balls and the women that attend them tends to mean I've always been happy to see it come round. This will be one of the few adult years I haven't sent it at a dinner/dance with a beautiful young woman... or 2 as the Ball progressed. The Aliens wrote: A year could arbitrarily start on any day of the year, why make a big deal out of one of them?
