Who is the best quarterback of all time?

Who is the best quarterback of all time?
My pick is Joe Namath, when he wasn't injured, and had semi-decent protection he could bomb the ball 60 yards and hit his reciever right on the numbers.

Maybe some will think I'm a nut for saying this, but I like Joe Montana. Granted, he didn't have the best arm, but when he was on his game, he had something better: he could see everything, and he knew where to throw that ball.

He was a great quarterback, and I think that he deserves to be enshrined in the temple to the football gods, but without the best recievers in the league surrounding him, and a system designed for him (West Coast offense) he'd be a puny quarterback. Namath/Unitas/Otto Graham were better quarterbacks all around, and played well even if they had crap recievers.Darth Wong wrote:Maybe some will think I'm a nut for saying this, but I like Joe Montana. Hmmm. I hate the 49'ers and I know Montana played for the Chiefs (glad and sad about that even to this day) I still gotta say that Joe was D'man. He could force plays, scamble with the best of them, and nail long and short passes like he was playing with his kids.Darth Wong wrote:Maybe some will think I'm a nut for saying this, but I like Joe Montana. They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

I think that Farve could be one of the best. He's a play maker, and an iron man.

"Super Joe" Montana is definitely among the best.
Fran Tarkenton was the best QB who never won a Super Bowl. Went there four times with the Vikings in the '70s, though.

As an aside, I disagree with the bolded statement. I'll elaborate if asked, but I think we all know running and D alone do not win games. (special teams are vital, as is the ability to Air out the pigskin.)Anyone who truly knows football and follows the game of football know(s) that Marino had the physical ability to throw the ball unlike anyone else. His quick release, his quick decision making, and his incredible velocity enabled him to compile yards, first downs, and touchdowns and turned the Dolphins into a offensive force with his presence alone. Not only that, he probably had the best pocket presence of anyone also. He could sense the rush and sidestep just at the right time. Bottom line: In his prime, i'd take this guy over anyone who has ever played. The two biggest keys to winning a ring are a proficient running game and a solid D. Marin(o) never had a proficient running game and when he had a solid D, he was way past his prime. He's the greatest ever.

I guess I'm an old softy: Johnny Unitas. Back in the day when men were men and they played football without dancing like idiots and pulling out cellphones whenever they scored a touchdown.

Sort of like the Bills and Cowboys

I hate the Cowboys for beating my Bills, but I won't deny that they were the better team. There's a difference between being a fan and being an ostrich. I see no point burying my head in the sand.StormTrooperTR889 wrote:Sort of like the Bills and Cowboys?

Anyway, you're forgetting that, at that time, Montana already won a superbowl, and Marino was only in his second season!
(29 for 50 for 318 with one touchdown is not a bad performance, albeit with 2 INT...) Thing was, Shula had completely retooled the Dolphin's offense around Marinos arm, and the niners clogged the passing lanes like rabid psychotic lunatics. What a great superbowl regardless.....Now, the way the Niners handed the bengals their asses...that was classic

Oh yes, Elway. Yet another QB who was horribly 0wned by Joe Montana in a Super Bowl. In fact, Joe Montana collected his 2nd and 3rd Super Bowl MVP awards against Marino and Elway respectively.JediNeophyte wrote:Elway!
