A question on original fics

Post by haas mark »

Do you (as both writers and readers of scifi) find it a relief to find an original fic, or do you just tend to ignore them moreso because they're "not your style"?

Just out of curiosity.

I generally avoid all fics that aren't original.

Don't you know that, over here lad, they like it best like this!

I enjoy original fics immensely - particular because I've wrote one myself.

It depends on how good it is. By original fics, you mean original sci-fi universes, right?

More likely I would think it'd be original in the sense that it isn't a fanfic...

And as I write more O-fics than fanfics, yes.

I wnat to write an orignial fic, but getting the whole universe i wnat to write about down without making it technical is proving to be a challenge... plus I use ideas from lots of other writers (essentially, the DnD Manual of the Planes / Monseter Manual).

The problem with creating an original universe is that you have to make everything from scratch. :P

There's so much I know about a universe I want to write about... except the really important details I need before I can write.

I consider that the fun part about writing, myself. It can also be a challenge to make everything internally consistent.

Doesn't really matter to me. I had on original, sorta started in the middle, but didn't really get many views. Where as my Star Wars fic has probably as many views as that other did, and I'm not even close to done.

What's your fic about?

Maybe you could have a sci fi courtroom thriller

Well, I personally have a scifi (called "The Invasion") that I updated last week; a psycho thriller which I haven;t updated in a couple months; a fantasy that I haven't updated in about a year.

Actually, how I solved that is simple: Write an appendix. I have, over the course of the last several years, attempted to write a single story six times. Each time, I go through and stop, realizing that it wouldn't quite work as how I first envisioned it (generally a piece of a technology, other times how an entire spiecies thinks) so I just sat down, and wrote out how everything works, the histories of everybdoy (except for some of the less important races) and then I'll work on the actual story.

Build the world(or universe), then write the story.

I rather much prefer original fiction, both as a writer and as a reader.
As a writer, it is always a challenge to create a consistent universe from the ground up, even when using somebody else's ideas (though usually, they end up being changed somewhat).
As a reader, I rather enjoy much more meeting a new universe, with its different characters, different capabilities, different settings, than thread on a already known story.

An original fic is rare, often, making the universe is hard enough(if your a slob, like I). And a lot of times, you just leave your work to stagnate. But I'm sure a lot of you have more initiative and will power than I, so power to you, people! WORD LIFE!
