Survivalists-what is your view on them?

Post by FaxModem1 »

Are they nuts? eccentric? extra-cautious? just what this nation needs?

Two examples would be Burt Gummer from Tremors and Dale Gribble from King of the Hill.

And also, by any chance, do we have any survivalists among us? If so, what is your view on how to prepare for things?

Most of them are crazy, but sadly, the world at large isn't much better than they make it out to be.

I've got no problem with them, I'd do what they did if I had the money. I love the idea of stocking up supplies and not having to deal with others.

I think they're cool. Their arsenals will come in useful when the xombieplague is upon us.

Im assuming by "survivalist" you mean the anti-social, parnoid, trouble with authority types who live in the back woods and think they are going to survive armagedon. Im sure you have already figured out I dont take them too seriously.

There is nothing wrong at all with keeping water/food/shotgun/etc on hand in case of natural distaster, I do live in earthquake country after all. I laughed at the Year 2000 survivalists. I remember one guy saying he was stockpiling gold coins. As if gold would really be useful to a population that by and large could not tell a gold coin from a fake one. Not to mention that in the aftermath of a real collapse of society, barter would be king for a long time.

Although they're not harming anyone, they're still kind of funny. I'm sure there are still people in bomb shelters from the Y2K craze. I guess it depends on what they think will happen.

Hahahahahah ha. Survival skills are handy as hell, so says I who's been through Winter Mountain Survival School in the Corps. Miserable but handy skills.

Wannabe's are annoying no matter what they want to be.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Did you go to the survival school in the Sierra Nevada? One day I saw some Marines learning to ski at a resort. It was kinda funny to see them learn, but serious too cause obviously one day their life might depend on it.

MWTS is oh, about forty miles west of Bridgeport CA and (I think) sixty miles from Reno. In fact you fly into Reno to go to the school. Everyone just calls it Bridgeport though.

They offer a wide variety of schools there. Summer Mountain Warfare School (been there done that), Winter Mountain Warfare School (been there done that, yes including skiing), Winter/Summer Survival (did the winter one in Febuary), and various rock climbing course's (no didn't do that. Scared of hights).
